Make your next trip to California a mix of town and wine country

(ARA) - Very few people are immune to the allure of California. From the time of the gold rush to the golden days of Hollywood studio movie-making, the Golden State has drawn optimists, dreamers and everyone curious about a better life in a sunnier place.

Today's travelers are the modern link in the chain of pilgrims to California. Luckily for them, getting there requires only the slightest inconveniences. Long waits at the baggage claim seem fairly insignificant, compared to the annoyances of the days of traveling by covered wagon or horse. And with cheap flights readily available, you can visit the plethora of sites that California has to offer on a number of different trips, without having to worry about your budget too much.

The city life

California has two of America's most iconic cities, and they make for great travel destinations, whatever your interests.

San Francisco's unique architecture, fascinating history and sheer beauty set it apart, but the city's character is what makes so many people fall head over heels in love with it. From visiting eerie Alcatraz to meandering through Golden Gate Park, exploring its museums and serene gardens, to getting a closer look at everyday life in the quaint neighborhoods like Hayes Valle or Russian Hill, you'll find a way to leave some of your heart there, like the old song says. Don't spend too much time with the average tourist spots like Fisherman's Wharf. Get to know the independent restaurants and shops, the neighborhood parks and the friendly locals by taking advantage of the easy-to-use public transportation system.

With one of the busiest airport hubs in the entire world as its main point of entry, it's easy to find Los Angeles cheap flights. Once you're on the ground, you can surrender to that old Hollywood magic and indulge in visiting landmarks like the Walk of Fame and Grauman's Chinese Theatre - or maybe even go on a tour of the stars' homes.

If that's not your taste, you can delve into the workaday life in L.A. and still find a city that's packed with pleasant surprises. L.A.'s cultural diversity infuses it with a dynamic personality that comes through in countless kinds of restaurants and shopping opportunities that range from markets filled with handmade crafts to cutting-edge style boutiques.

The wine country

It's more than just a place to indulge in winery tour after winery tour, although the appeal of that can't be underestimated.

Napa Valley has the best name recognition, and there's a good reason for that. It's become so commonplace for wines from the area to be ranked among the top in the world that it's hard to remember a time when the ascendancy of California wines was shocking. Devote time to wine tasting and tours to learn more about the processes that go into your favorite bottles, but do a little planning ahead to take advantage of the other major amenities, like the stellar dining opportunities. First and foremost, The French Laundry is in Yountville, in the heart of Napa, and reservations need to be made months - or even a year - in advance. If you can't get in there, don't worry, there are plenty of other superb restaurants that feature food that can stand up to the area's outstanding wines.

Idyllic Sonoma Valley should be as much a part of any California trip as Napa. Whether you drive here yourself or find a great deal among the many cheap flights to the area (it's not far from San Francisco) and then rent a car - the winding roads of Sonoma will charm you like few other places. In addition, there are wineries that are on par with the best of Napa, and some truly wonderful tours available. The town of Healdsburg makes a great base, thanks to its great restaurants, fun shops and classic layout - everything centers around a town square that is ideal for a stroll or a lazy afternoon between meals or wine tastings.

If Los Angeles is your city destination, when you head to or from wine country, consider taking the opportunity to drive along scenic California Highway 1. The drive is an unforgettable experience in itself. If you're a bit more pressed for time, search travel sites like Travelocity.com for cheap flights between major cities.
