Rep. Groe arrested on DUI charges

State Rep. Trish Groe, R-Lake Havasu City, was arrested Thursday night in Parker after driving under the influence of alcohol, said Lt. Linc Gilbert, spokesman for the La Paz County Sheriff's Department.

A deputy stopped Groe for speeding and driving erratically around 9 p.m. Thursday. Tests revealed she had a blood-alcohol content of .158, nearly twice the legal limit in Arizona, Gilbert said. Groe also had a canceled driver's license.

“I just want to say that I am very thankful that no one else was impacted or hurt. I am deeply ashamed and embarrassed of my behavior,” Groe said from her home Friday evening.

Groe said she had been drinking at her apartment in Phoenix and was driving through Parker.

“I feel very blessed that no one was injured because of my poor judgment,” she said.

She was charged with aggravated DUI for driving with a canceled license and extreme DUI for having a blood-alcohol content of more than .15, Gilbert said.

Groe on Friday disputed the canceled license, saying it was a mix-up with the Motor Vehicle Division that she hopes to resolve as soon as possible.

Officers released Groe to an undisclosed third party Thursday night. No bond was set and Groe did not spend any time in jail, Gilbert said.

“If we can find somebody there to release them to, we often do that,” he said.

Asked whether her position had an impact on avoiding a night in jail, Gilbert said, “No, not necessarily.”

Gilbert later said, “It can make some difference.” He added that Groe was “very, very cooperative” and did not argue with officers.

The case has been turned over to the La Paz County Attorney's Office. No appearance date was available at press time.

Arizona voters re-elected District 3 representatives Groe and Republican Nancy McLain in November. District 3 encompasses most of Mohave County, including Lake Havasu City, and a portion of La Paz County.

Parker is within La Paz County, but is part of district 24 and 3.

In Arizona, a person can be arrested for having a BAC of more than .08. Anything above .15 is considered extreme DUI.

I have been affiliated with alcohol-related incidences and I can honestly say that, because of them, I refuse to be a part of anything involving alcohol. I am not saying that people who enjoy to indulge should refrain from doing so, but I am saying that those who do enjoy it should do so carefully and in moderation. I have known people who have been wrongfully accused. I have witnessed those who are at fault for something refuse to take responsibility and let me just say that I am glad that this woman is taking action and accepting the problem for what it is. At least she accepts it and deals with the embarrassment, because she could choose to avoid the problem and deny it and live with the remorse and guilt. As one said before, she is just someone who drank and got caught. Many of you have most likely, at some point and time, had something to drink and then drove. You are all just as dangerous as she could have been, so get over it. "

She also probably will face $1,600 in fines, but an additional felony charge of driving with a suspended license won't be filed. This is her second arrest in eight years for driving under the influence of alcohol and with a suspended license. A felony conviction would have forced her to resign. "

Secondly, I was struck by a drunk driver myself who rear-ended me at over 70 mph. Thank God I wasn't killed, but I was seriously injured. Your lovely wishes of me or a family member of mine to be hurt by someone drinking and driving is totally ignorant and uncalled for. I don't drink and drive for that reason and I never did before I was hurt. You'll never find me in a jail cell because I don't make stupid decisions like Trish did nor do I have a substance abuse problem. It should be noted the Arizona Constitution provides for the impeachment of state officers in the event they commit misdemeanors; here, Rep. Groe should be held to the same standard as the executive or judicial branch and remove herself from office for her commission of at least a misdemeanor. It she refuses to leave, a recall petition should be initiated district wide. In the event she resigns, the Republican Party could appoint a successor who would have over three years to build a coaltion for re-election. In the event she is recalled, a new vote to replace her would result, creating an unknown successor possibility. "

Seriously, America needs to fix our schools and education process if this is the result. Now back to the meat of the matter. Trish Groe obviously made a really bad mistake that will affect her for the rest of her life. The impact and repercussions will be that of possibly losing her State Representative position, fines, losing(possibly for the second time...1st time was her CA driver's license)her AZ driver's license(if she ever had one to begin with???...seems she should have an AZ driver's license considering she reprents our state and communities) and last but not least jail time. If I were Mrs. Groe, I would first and foremost get treatment and ongoing treatment for her addictions, whatever they may be. Secondly, when she is of clear mind, she should immediately implement a campaign of going to middle schools and high schools telling these kids that even though she as a person of power, she isn't exempt from the laws. Maybe this could save a few pre-teens and teenagers from drug use and alcohol consumption with regards to getting into a car with someone under the influence. Lives could be saved here. This would be turning a negative into a positive for Trish's local community and statewide communities for Arizona. It would be a long campaign, but it would show that Trish Groe cares and understands the scope of her crime (which is a felony). The state of Arizona has a "zero tolerance" of driving under the influence. Many people have died as a result of someone's lack of good judgment. Trish was very lucky she didn't hurt herself or anyone else that day. Her judgment had to be severely impaired because of the fact that she decided to do over 235 mile drive at night. It wasn't like she was just driving down the street(although I don't condone any drinking and driving), but driving such a long distance makes me question her common sense in this matter. Despite my dismay at Trish Groe's "drunken debacle", I hold no animosity towards her. I just hope she gets help and is contrite for her actions. "

The reason I'm divulging all this info is because I wonder how Rep. Groe will plead once she's charged. She was guilty of more than one offense and I believe she should stop wasting tax payers money to plead innocent and go through a lengthy trial. On an added note.....I'm sure she knows her politcal career is over so Rep. Groe....why not just plead guilty and get it over. Do it for your constituents and your family. If you don't it'll get worse before it gets better. "

If this would have been a Spring Breaker, they would be returning to school wondering how they are going to afford the fine AND keep going to school. I truly hate it when others are treated different. It wasnt as if she had one or two drinks at a party and was driving a few blocks home, she was on a trip back from Phoenix as a Representitive of the people of Lake Havasu City and driving through many towns and cities along the way, passing thousands of cars in which many peoples lives could have changed in an instant. The fact that she is (or has) entered treatment has no bearing on any criminal charges. The only thing treatment does is get one condition of any sentencing (Alcohol screening/education) done ahead of time. That and maybe help her to control her problem. "

" Life changes in an instant....On July 2,2005, my husband Mike and I took a leisurely drive through the desert with our destination being to pick up our kids from my mom's house in Havasu. Just outside of Parker a drunk driver coming from Fox's Landing tried passing a vehicle in front of him and hit us head on. I survived but Mike was killed instantly. I was life flighted to Phoenix where my face was completely reconstructed with metal plates, my left eye was lost and my ocular bones rebuilt with teflon. I was released from the hospital after painful surgeries only to go home to recover and try to raise 2 small children on my own. I am currently still healing with my family back in our treasured home in Valley Center, California. It took a year to watch the laxidasical way that La Paz County made no attempt to prosecute Jack Bonfield, the man that destroyed my life. It was not until I was able to get the Prosecuting Attorney from Yuma to step in and handle this case that anything at all was done. Yet, 2 weeks ago I woke up to the voice of the Arizona Corrections Dept. notification that already, Mr. Bonfield was being released. He went directly back to California where he resides and celebrated his first night out of prison at a party in California where there was no one to supervise his immediate violation of his probation given by Judge Burke of La Paz County with alcohol and marijauna. Let me tell you about Mr. Jack Bonfield - He was 20 years old when he hit my husband and I head on with a blood alcohol level of .222 - he already had 3 past drug and alcohol offenses under his belt when he walked away from the accident site as his marijauna bong rolled out of the vehicle he was driving and landed amid the 133 cans of coors light that he had been transporting to a party in Parker after leaving Fox's Landing. He spent only hours in jail before being bonded out by his enabling mother. Throughout the impending court dates he did not have to be inconvenienced into showing up to them because his busy work schedule as a bartender/bouncer would not allow. However he had plenty of time 5 months later while waiting to go to prison to violates the terms of is bail release on 12/31/05 with alcohol and marijauna, while I, as the victim still had to drive across the desert alone and partially blind to be at each court date while my children had to be left behind to suffer through the emotional torture of seperation from me and the fear of my never coming home again because of drivers like Jack Bonfield. Ms. Groe - you are nothing more than a Jack Bonfield. I am disgusted and sadly not surprised. I am always stunned at the drug and alcohol presense in Arizona. You should be more than ashamed. You should live my life for a week as a single mother and widow. Just one week. If you have any sense of true remorse for your actions, you will never endanger another life again. I hope someone forwards this directly to you and makes you read these sincere words from a woman who lives with the destruction that actions like yours caused. "

Penalties increase substantially with the severity of the intoxication and the frequency of DUI convictions. "

As a newbe to Havasu and looking at Trish's situation, I am beginning to believe that she DOES represent a growing demographic of Havasu. In my current employment, I get to observe many of the people whom Trish represents, as I see many of these Havasu constituents starting thier workdays with a quick stop at the many local supermarkets and convenience locations throughout our fair city and instead of the normal coffee, tea or fruit smoothie that I am fond of, as they get theirs in 6, 12, 18 or the popular 30 pack. Now these are not Spring breakers or vacationeers going out to the lake for a day of fun and sun, these are the people of Havasu whom are on thier way to work! They may have been heading off to your house to fix or build something for you.... Hmmm, look up.., did the person who nailed that ceiling up there have a few before they started his/her day? OR MAYBE even to fix your car or boat? (Do I need my brakes done today? hmmm could you breath in this tube for me... thanks). Heck, I'm even thinking of running for election and use this to a winning advantage by campaining in the Beer and Wine isles of the local convenience stores! I could win by a landslide and while the those who go to work within the city are snookered on thier daily 12 pack and those who are retired are "prescription medicated", I could clean out the cities chauffeurs, run off "Outsiders" (read as: everyone who wants to visit or actually live this wonderful city) and to turn the whole city into a Disney style park complete with admission booths placed strategically along the 95 and at every boat dock...... then I will relocate to a city with alot more sanity and read this website about all the funny (stuff) that goes on in this city. So if she weren't in her position she would have served at least a night in jail only to be released and serve more time later....but that will never happen. OJ can murder 2 people and not do any jail time over it so why should she? She didn't kill anybody THIS time, but what about next time? She admits to being an alcoholic which means she will continue to drink and probably has been drinking since the incident. I hope it doesn't happen, but when she walks away from this with a slight slap on the wrist and 4 months down the road she ends up killing someone while "having bad judgement", don't say we weren't warned. " I believe Trish made a unwise decision but it ought not to be a costly decision. We are human, we err and learn from our mistakes. Trish has been one of the most affective representatives this region has had. The fact is: She made a decision not in her best interest or others. Her arrest was broadcasted on the television news. She will pay the piper as far as her conduct and irrational decision she made by taking courses, seeking counseling and the shame of others upon her. I, for one, have forgiven her. Allow her to continue to be the representative she is, a good one. If we can allow a President of the US and Congress, to lie to us Americans to invade Iraq and cost us billions of dollars, almost bankrupting our government, and most importantly of all, to cost thousands of American lives and hundred thousand Iraqi lives. and injuring 30,000 soldiers permanently then I think we can forgive, Trish!!! Does Ms. Groe think that she is above the law? Mix up at the MVD?? Does she think that we are stupid? Of course there was a mix up at the MVD - they issued her a license in the first place. As for the DUI - the license should be suspended just like ours would be - 1 year at least. She can ride HAT back and forth or get a scooter/bicycle just like everyone else. "

" Since when was it a qualification for being a politicion to be a saint? She made a poor judgement. She should be treated like any other citizen, whether it be a fine, jail or whatever. If making a poor judgement in their private life is reason for leaving office, we wouldn't have any politicions! How many have made poor decisions in office, such as thinking that our taxes are money to just spend, or how many forget that they represent the citizens, not illeagals? If you get a DUI, and driving isen't part of your job, should you lose your job? "

" It's a shame that Rep. Groe felt the need to drink to that amount of intoxification, but I do hope she will seek some help for it. I'm not talking about it as far as "going into rehab" as so many do thinking that will solve all her problems. I'm going to assume that this was not the first time that she has driven drunk, but it is probably the first time she was caught. Everybody deserves a second chance. I hope she is able to assess what her problem is and take care of it and continue to be our representative. Hang in there Rep. Groe and don't give up. Everybody screws up. "

" Yes drunk driving is a bad thing but she deserves and has the same rights as everyone else - just like Patrick Kennedy. Innocent until proven guilty so let the courts handle it from here. If she has a drinking problem she needs help and I hope she gets it. Put your pitchforks, burning torches an mob mentallity away and let our justice system go to work. And to correct the assumption of her state of intoxication she wasn't as intociated when she left Phoenix as she was when she was stopped as the human body contiues to absorbe alcohol after the last drink. At least she was right up front and truthful said she had been drinking and made a mistake and did not lie like Kennedy who said his presciptions made him do it even though people saw him in a bar drinking. 0.22 leaving Phoenix wrote on Mar 25, 2007 1:09 PM:

" Check the WIKIPEDIA free encyclopedia on the Internet. The retrograde extrapolation rate of alcohol elimination for the avarage person (with variables), is commonly estimated at 0.015 to 0.20 per hour. Thus, one might reasonably estimate the BAC leaving Phoenix for that 3-hour drive, at between 0.21 and 0.22. Which is falling down drunk. Watch out Phoenix... "

" And yet she feels justified sponsoring bills legislating other's morals... I feel she should be made an example of and be given at least the full mandatory minimum sentence and fines but I doubt that will happen. I suspect the end result will be a suspended sentence, minimal fines, a little rehab, a little more (apparently false) repentance and she'll be right back where she was. "

" I am sure that Trish Groe is extremely embarrassed, humiliated, and ashamed of her behavior. My hope for her is that she gets help for an obvious alcohol problem. If she was drinking in her apartment, knowing that she would have to be on the road...what does that tell you? She's won the "2005 Friend of the Family" award. She's obviously a good person with the disease of alcoholism. I hope she is reading this. Besides being mortified about her behavior, she could also have killed someone. Alcoholism is treatable. You just don't pick up a drink...and you get help from other alcoholics. "

" I hope and trust that this politician is afforded the same treatment by the Arizona legal system we regular "Joes" get. That's about $6k in fines and court costs, 10 days in the slammer, loss of licence, and drug and alcohol counseling. Equal treatment for equal people. At least we should hope that she's treated the same as the rest of us! "

" Your a bunch of hypocrites. I don't believe any of you never drove after having a few drinks. Yes, what she did is wrong and she will have her day in court. You all just haven't been caught yet. At some point and time everyone has had something to drink and drove. Your next statement will be that you weren't drunk or you only drove a short distance. So you think your better than her your wrong. Go on tell me how rightious you are. "

" I sure hope that she steps down from her position as our State Rep. Her reckless irresponsibility is an embarrassment to everyone she represents. It is only by pure dumb luck that she didn't kill any innocent people on her drunken adventure from Phoenix to Parker. Thank God they got her out from behind the wheel. I sure hope that she doesn't get off easy because of her political influence. If she had killed someone while behind the wheel, she would have had to pay for it for the rest of her life, but like I sad, only dumb luck protected her and others. So she shouldn't get off easy just because she is lucky to be alive. She will probably end up with the minimum sentence of around $750 in fines, go to some alcohol education class and serve a few days in Jail, if that!! Ok, honestly, who really cares that she was driving on a cancelled license and it might be a misunderstanding that she hopes to resolve soon.. Um… Big Picture.. You were Really, Really Drunk and you got in your car and drove all the way to Parker before getting pulled over with a blood alcohol content of .158!! Maybe that is the thing you should work on getting resolved soon. I’m just wondering, was she drinking during the 2+ hour trip to parker? Because if she wasn’t, that would mean that she had probably stopped drinking over 2-3 hours earlier. Man, I wonder what her blood alcohol content was when she first got behind the wheel in Phoenix… I’m really glad that she feels very blessed that no one was injured because of her poor judgment. To me, getting injured is what happens when someone might slip and fall or possibly get hurt during an activity like a sport. An example of getting KILLED is what happens when a drunk driver smacks into your car at 70 MPH. If you want to see something interesting, open a new page in your web browser and Google the phrase “poor judgment”. It is a very popular phrase used by politicians and corporations when issuing a statement to the public when they don’t want to admit they did something illegal or unethical. So maybe she should reissue her statement so it reads “I feel very blessed that no one was killed because of my incredibly reckless and irresponsible choice to drive while being extremely under the influence of alcohol.
