A fire in a computer room at Havasu Regional Medical Center Saturday — and subsequent water from automatic sprinklers — made a mess on the hospital's first floor, closing the building to visitors.
The Lake Havasu City Fire Department received a report of the fire at about 4:00 p.m. and all crews, including five engines and many off-duty personnel, responded, according to Fire Chief Dennis Mueller. One engine from the Desert Hills Fire Department also responded, he said.
The hospital's sprinkler system contained the fire, which started in a main server, to the computer room and firefighters were "able to get the fire out fairly quickly," Mueller said.
However, smoke and water forced the temporary evacuation of the first floor, including the emergency room and the lobby, Mueller said. Critical patients were cared for in a temporary triage area and readmitted to the emergency room after about 40 minutes.
Non-critical patients sent to a nearby urgent care facility for treatment, Benson said.
Cleaning crews had been brought in and visitors were being asked not to enter the hospital until the cleanup was complete. Benson said the hospital would probably reopen to visitors by Sunday morning.
The fire did not affect patient rooms on the upper floors of the hospital, Benson said. The greatest disruption was a delay of about an hour in meal service. Four patients were moved to other rooms because of the smell of smoke.
Benson said because of damage to the computer network, the hospital is working on "down procedures."
"That's basically doing things the way we used to, by hand," she said. "We do have some computerized equipment, but because we're a hospital we have manual procedures to back those up."
