The Lake Havasu High School boys track and field team closed out the season Saturday in the Class 4A, Division I state meet at Mesa Community College with a school-record time and third-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay.

“It was just nice to see us finish off the season on a good note,” Knights coach Jake Gregory said. “Coming into it we were — hoping for third. The guys came out, they ran fast, it was fun to watch.”

Brent Michaels, Trey Athay, Blake Garcia and Trevor Athay topped their previous school-record mark of 43.50 seconds with a finish of 43.43 in the 4x100 Saturday.

The quartet set the previous best mark in the West Valley Region meet April 30 and also matched the 43.50 time during Wednesday’s state preliminary races at Mesa.

Havasu’s 4x800-meter relay team of Garrett Zuber, Malachy Ryan, Cyrus Eckhaus and Brad Fender placed 16th out of 16 teams Saturday in Mesa. The Knights finished the race in 8:43.38.

In individual competition, Michaels secured sixth in the 100-meter dash by finishing in 11.29, Saturday.

Havasu’s Demi Muha also qualified to compete in Saturday’s 4A-I finals in the girls 400-meter run, but did not participate due to unspecified reasons.

In the preliminary session of the state meet Wednesday, Havasu had four events eliminated from the competition. Knights who participated in state preliminaries but did not qualify for the finals were Muha (100-meter dash), Tiffany McMann (discus), Vanessa Torrecillas (300-meter hurdles) and the girls 4x800-meter relay team of Nikki Morris, Anjelica Ulrich, Christine Prater and Hanna Henson.
