Gas prices not slowing tourists

By David Bell
Today's News-Herald
Published Saturday, July 5, 2008 9:24 PM MST

Four-dollar gas prices are not enough to slow traffic into Lake Havasu City. That’s according to the crowd packed into the Bridgewater Channel over the July Fourth holiday weekend.

David Bell/News-Herald Photo Sydney Wheeler, left, Jessica Heller and Amy Law share a laugh as they celebrate the holiday weekend in the Bridgewater Channel Saturday.

“We’re not going to let gas prices control our lives,” said Eric Rudd, of Riverside, Calif.

The overwhelming majority of those contact by Today’s News-Herald Saturday were from Southern California, generally a “one-tank trip” as promoted by the Lake Havasu Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

“It’s worth it,” said Amy Law, of San Diego. “Coming to Havasu is what I was looking forward to all winter.”

Law brought with a friend, Jessica Heller, making it Heller’s first time on the lake. Heller said she “loves it and I’m coming back next year.”

A number said they have vacation homes in the city and leave their boats here rather than tow from California, saving a substantial amount of money on gasoline.

“I own a Civic hybrid which I use to drive here,” said Marc Rinzler, of Winchester, Calif. “I leave my boat and a tow vehicle here so I’m not spending all that gas money on a large truck. Plus I save on storage fees with a house.”

Mark Barren, of Las Vegas, does the same thing, using his wife’s higher mileage car to drive to their vacation home here. “We come every weekend,” he said.

For those without a house here, Lake Havasu is still the place to be. That’s according to Nick Greco, of Cypress, Calif.

“Everybody is here, the water is perfect and it’s alway6s a good time. “Plus gas is cheaper in Arizona than it is in California.”

Kenny Epstein said the trip to Lake Havasu City allows him a “good time to spend with the kids,” while Danny Brown and Kimberlee Des Rosiers of Las Vegas said the atmosphere gives a welcome change of pace from their native Las Vegas.

“I’ve lived in Vegas all my life and seen too many people lose too much at the tables,” Brown said. “This is relaxing.”

“And it’s only a half-tank (of gas) to get here,” Des Rosiers added.

Bryan Brooks of Hermosa Beach, Calif., said it wasn’t gasoline prices but time that prevented him from coming to Lake Havasu City as often as he and his family would like. “It’s always a great scene here.”

But it was Colin Maxwell of Riverside, Calif. that said he had the simplest solution to getting to Lake Havasu City and saving on gas. “I’m not driving and I’m not paying for the gas.”

" "feel pity u", very well put. These cop haters just lash out at the police due to their own illegal actions that got them busted. It's much easir for them to bag on the police and much more difficult to admit they messed up once. These grudges against law enforcement will continue the rest of their lives.... "

" The fact that the police/judge hater has to resort to lies now, in the face of overwhelming evidence, including published photos is just sad.

Of course, his arrests are "not his fault" it's the fault of the criminal justice system that had the temerity to catch him breaking the law and hold him accountable for his actions. Did dad not spend enough time with you? Did mom not love you enough? Whatever your excuse, it's time to be an adult and take responsibility for yourself.

I still pity him though. To lie so much and so often means he's to the point of believing the lies now. And that means his offspring will be indoctrinated into that mindset as well. Another "victim" that blames the state for every one of her criminal misdeeds, failed "baby daddy" relationships and inability to earn anything close to a decent living without the assistance of welfare, food stamps and state health care.

    I pity you. "

" I live here so gas isn't a problem for me to enjoy Havasu. What I find funny though is the title of this article, 'Gas prices not slowing tourists'. Really? I noticed that all your quotes are from people that actually drove to get here or got a free ride. I know a lot of people that would've come here or usually do come here that didn't. Just because of gas doubling or tripling in price for them. "

" "JM", hilarious posts!! You're a funny guy/gal! Maybe that will put him back on topic. So true though, people are always quick to blame law enforcement for just about everything. I think we all know why though, not too difficult to figure out. July 4th weekend was crazy. I don't hang out in the channel but judging by the rest of the lake and beaches it was obvious that there was a ton of traffic. Not the most i've ever seen but right up there. And the few times i passed through the channel it was packed with it's typical crowd. The police sure seemed to have their hands full dealing with unruly weekend warriors. Thanks for the laughs JM and the attempt to stear folks back to the topic of the article. "

The JM's of the world are the type who felt the world owes them and have grown hateful with time and direct that anger at those who've attained the success the covet. Gas prices did keep some away, but many stayed other places because of the bad reputation Havasu has on the net due to the courts and police. We MUST fix this problem in our city government. All of us depend on tourism for lower taxes. "

JM wrote on Jul 8, 2008 8:02 PM:

" Once again..... The article is about gas prices and how it is or isn't effecting tourism. Not about how police writing so called unjustified tickets (like there is such a thing) is or isn't effecting tourism. It's interesting how some people measure "true patriotism" by flaunting their wealth by publicly advertising how many homes he/she owns and how they spent sooooo much money on any given weekend once upon a time ago. And then recommend others to take a class on economics when it sound like they should be taking classes in personal finance and how to handle their money! But heh, at least this is good practice for you cop haters for when there's an article that actually pertains to law enforcement! "

I was here when the Police station was down By the holiday in and when Hussongs and Krystals were the Only hot spots in town. Do you remember the Airport on the Island and planes coming over your head spewing fuel. When Empty Police cars stood at the north and south end of town to deter speeders cause there were not enough cops to actually man the cars.
I have NEVER been arrested or Cited in Havasu.
But during the last 4 years I have had at least 10 so called Safety checks. I have a 25 ft Deckboat nothing Fancy that would "attract" attention. I have been pulled over after dinner twice in the late late evening, early morning coming from Friends homes, with the excuse that I was doing 5 mph over the speed limit, but the first question being "How Much have you had to drink". I drive a plane old F150.
I come to Havasu like I have for the last 38 years to Have fun, Enjoy my home and let my kids have the fun I did here through the 70's and 80's. The problem is that the Police do not stop with the True trouble makers. They cop and sttitude (no pun intended). With two properties in town I want to see this City Prosper. I had planned on retiring there in a couple of years like some of my friends have. But with the direction the City has gone in NO More.
MCCullouch and Woods must be turning in their graves. This town was built by the man who helped design Disneyland (Woods) to be fun, Bikini clad babes with cocktails in Hand would greet the Visitors he would Fly in to sell property to.
So yes I may be a spoiled brat, I've worked hard to deserve being one. I just hate to see the town go down the drain. THere are problem and you people just bury your heads denial. "

You know, when you lie about something so obvious, like the volume of people that were in Havasu and in the channel this weekend, ESPECIALLY when there were dozens of pictures published show the exact opposite, it really takes away any credibility you have when you complain about the police and the judge.

That giant lie, in the face of overwhelming evidence, shows everyone exactly what you are: a career criminal, whose failings are "not your fault" (like everyone else in jail)with an axe to grind and unfortunately a forum to do it.

The last 2-3 days of what people posted on there was not good! One guy said the Havasu Police were on a search mission. I'm sure you've heard it all. You were in total agreement with what a poster named "Mike" was saying and his bashing of the town here and it's residents. For those of you who haven't read it, look it up on the "News Archives" and read the posts of the last couple of days. It was just laid to rest this morning. Anyway, here is a post of CalHav's:

Mike is absolutely right on all accounts. It is unfortunate but many full time residents in Havasu move there to Retire cause it was cheaper and warmer than god foresaken Wyoming or The Dakotas in Winter. Now your miserable cause you have this illusion that Havasu can survive without tourism. That about the same as Disneyland surviving without it. Problem is some many of you are stuck in Fantasyland with the belief that Havasu is from the Frontierland you came from. Malls, Airports, Crime and congestion are all part of tomarowland.
From the sounds of it though, it seems like you want Californians to go away, Which tells me your Park of choice is Knotts, and you'll enjoy life in the Ghost Town "

Him and "Mike" seem to think bashing the residents here is the way to go. And that we'd be in a state of mediocrity here were it not for them. I don't think that most tourists who come here are like these two. And, I don’t really consider them actual “tourists” as they own homes here! I guess you could call them Havasu Wannabe’s. "
