Holiday weekend claims 3
Second PWC accident vicitm dies in hospital

A 14-year-old girl has died, the result of a collision between a boat and a personal watercraft Saturday.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials confirmed the girl died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, from injuries resulting from the crash.

Sherrie Moore, who described herself as the victim’s grandmother, said in an email to Today’s News-Herald the victim was Tiffany Breslin, of Murrieta, Calif.

It’s the third death on the Colorado River and Lake Havasu during the July Fourth holiday weekend.

Breslin died in the same accident on the river near the Needles Bridge that claimed the life of a 19-year-old woman Saturday. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released.

Cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The first death occurred Friday afternoon, when transient Jimmy Dale Maguglin, 48, was found floating face down in the Bridgewater Channel, off the shore near the Lions Dog Park.

Rescuers Dennis Harnage and Ron Adkins pulled Maguglin from the water and performed mouth-to-mouth until the Lake Havasu City Police Boat Patrol arrived and started cardio pulmonary resuscitation.

Harnage and Adkins were back in the Channel Sunday, looking out over the spot where Maguglin died.

“Jim was a good man. If you were hungry, he’d offer to feed you. He was always offering to help,” Harnage said. “He was one of my best friends and I really miss him.”

Adkins said Maguglin had recently suffered a series of strokes and had lost full use of his left arm.

“He told me he wanted to die, he said he was done,” Adkins said through tears. “We tried to stop him. He was our main dude.”

Lake Havasu City Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Maguglin’s death. Alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Two other incidents over the weekend had less lethal outcomes. On Saturday, Lake Havasu City Fire Department personnel were called out to Beachcomber RV Park when a boat just offshore exploded.

According to Lake Havasu City Police, the operator started the boat and saw a flash. The unidentified male victim was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center with minor burn injuries. The boat was completely destroyed.

The other incident Saturday is being described as a “near-drowning” by San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials. Brandon Mueller, 23, of Washington state, was diving from a large rock in Copper Canyon Saturday when he disappeared under water.

“After several minutes of searching, a civilian scuba diver located Brandon Mueller in nearly 30 feet of water. Mueller was administered CPR by off-duty fire department personnel and an off-duty registered nurse until deputies and Lake Havasu City Fire Paramedics could arrive,” reads the report.

Mueller was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center in critical condition and later flown to Sunrise Medical Center.

Investigation into the incident continues. Sheriff’s officials say it is unknown if alcohol is factor.

He has been there since the 4th of July and hangen in there. My brother was too going to jump that rock and slipped and fell. Now fighting for his life. But we do have to thank the sheriffs for there quick response. If the sheriffs had not been there within the 90 sec. my brother would not be here. I thank GOD for him still here, his nurses, doctors and support team. WARNING: IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE OUT DON'T LET A FRIEND JUMP!!! Just like we would take the keys away for a drunk friend do the same DONT let him/her Jump! Save a Life! "

" I am so sorry about Brandon. I didn’t know him but I had hoped, much like many others, that he would make a full recovery. To his family and friends our hearts go out to you. I have been going to Havasu for 30 years, and Copper Canyon is no less dangerous than the year before, and yet people still jump day after day. I think these jumps need to stop. We have all seen the crosses on cliff sides up and down the river right? What if one was placed at the top of the rock in Copper Canyon for Brandon and for others that have passed? I can’t help but wonder if a symbol of remembrance and loss of life could spark awareness and make people think long and hard before they take that jump. May you find peace in your memories of your loved ones. scj "

I must say our anxiety was high that day because shortly after we arrived at Copper Canyon we witness some nerve racking jumps. Brandon's fall led my friend and I to instantly pray. I would have joined in the search but was too far away. I have been haunted by the memory of that jump and have been praying for him. I will redirect my prayers to you and your family. Please allow me to go out and place a cross from where he jumped. Maybe this will detour others from jumping and give me peace of mind. God Bless You! "

Do you really think you're doing anyone any good by getting on your high horse and telling anyone who brings that point to light they are lacking compassion? I very much hope for B's full and healthy recovery. But I also have compassion for the other kids, ready to do stupid things, and want to remind them stupid actions can have dire consequenses. At least B's actions only hurt himself. The careless jerks who decided to drink and drive and risk hurting others would not see any compassion from me. Help the next kid by telling it like it is and telling your drunk buddy to hand over the keys. "

Another mother wrote on Jul 8, 2008 5:28 PM:

" While I read all the comments about Brandon I can not help but wonder how many of the others who were watching him make the jump have done something risky? Most of us who have children worry each day they may do something that will end up tragic like this or that someone else will do something to harm them (drunk boaters for instance). Many of us look back on our lives and wonder how we have survived choices we have made. Look on YouTube and wonder why anyone would take such a risk, take a look, its is very scary and glorifying it does not help. Brandon is not alone in this jump, which makes me wonder why is it allowed in Copper Canyon? Two young men, one weekend, something is very wrong with the picture. Brandon is no different than any other young man/woman, life happens one time, often we take risks. My prayer is that everyone who watched this event, young and old will take away the thought that it could have been you, your sibling, your cousin, your child, your loved one and ask yourself how YOU can make sure this does not happen to anyone else....ever.
Brandon is a great guy, a great friend, a wonderful son. Many people have been touched by this young man so positively it is difficult that anyone would focus on why he did it instead of HOW to prevent anyone else from doing it. I send my prayers to his family, strength to this loving young man and hope to all of his friends and family that care so much for him. Nothing is worse than losing a child....nothing. "

" On Thursday 7/3/08 I saw a Life flight helicopter land at Havasu Springs Resort to transport a 3 year old to a trauma center with major head trauma due to a solo PWC accident. Nothing said about it in this news story.

I heard several versions of the story and think this is the one that makes the most sense.

Dad got onto the back of his new PWC with his 3 year old sitting up front. He started it up but flew off the back. It continued full speed into a rock island and the 3 yr. old tumbled over the rocks and landed in the water on the other side with major head trauma. A witness in the water on the other side saw what looked like a "rag doll" fly into the water.

This new ski had a large hole in the front and that my daughter witnessed.

Putting two and two together it sounds like the leash line was not attached to the Dad and the 3 year old may have grabbed onto the throttle without him knowing it.

Let me know how the kid is doing if you find out anything more. "

We passed by as people were administering CPR to the man in the channel, we were sorry to here he had died. I have been going to Havasu for over 30 years and now take my little boys – it is a different place from when I was younger. More people and larger boats mixed with alcohol or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time is a dangerous combination. If you are going to operate a boat you have no business drinking, just like in a car. People need to pay more attention to ALL the surrounding circumstances – swimming, boating, driving, skiing whatever. We are truly sorry for those of you who lost family and friends this past weekend and we hope the young man from Copper Canyon makes a full recovery. "

Completely ruined everyone's good time. Three freinds from my boat went to help search for Brandon and one was the registered nurse that helped with CPR. We were all having a great time until this incident. It just doesn't make sense to me! What would make someone want to do this??? Two people had jumped before him and made it; we all screamed for them not to do it either. The difference was that Brandon attempted a back flip, not making a full rotation, landed on his head in the water. It was horrifying to all who saw. After his idiotic decision to do this, three quarters of the people cleared out due to the overwhelming event. I was in hysterics, I've never seen such a thing before. I instantly prayed for Brandon and I will continue to do so. On behalf of everyone, please think before attepting these death defying stunts, it isn't worth it in the slightest! For what, some applause?? Barely!

" im curious, why do people drive hundreds of miles to the lake, only to launch the boat and park it on the in the channel? for the life of me, i will never understand it. it's not because of gas prices, these fools have been doing this for years. you don't need a boat to hang in the channel, but i guess a beach chair isn't as cool as a boat to show off to people who you dont even know. i mean jeez if you have a boat.. GO SOMEWHERE !! "

Where were the cops and fire medics wrote on Jul 6, 2008 11:21 PM:

" Sounds like the Police and Fire Departments had their hands full this weekend. My wife and I went for a walk along the channel this weekend, (west side.) The channel was packed. Everyone seemed to be having a great time, there were a few people who were acting in a drunken stupor, but what else is new down there? One guy looked like he was smoking pot, and some other was crawling on the ground drunk off his butt. We noticed two police officers on the other side standing about 100 feet apart from each other dealing with two boats. There was a big crowds around each cop. I didn’t notice any other officers on the west side, and didn’t see the fire medic’s anywhere. I know everyone has a varied view, but if all people did by complaining was accomplish an unsafe environment, I think it was a big mistake! I’ve seen innocent people get pummeled in a large fight down in the channel. "
