A late rally in Game 2 wasn’t enough to get the Tigers in the win column, as visiting Quartzsite Scholars Academy handed the Telesis/Lake Havasu Charter volleyball team its second loss of the season.

Telesis Preparatory Academy/Lake Havasu Charter School volleyball teammates Cheree Stephers (12), Samantha Rule (1) and Emily Kuczynski (6) bump the ball during Game 1 against Quartsite Scholars Academy Thursday. The Tigers lost the match in three straight 9-25, 22-25, 12-25.

The Lady Scholars won the Thursday match in three straight, 25-9, 25-22, 25-12.

“They found our weaknesses and took advantage of that,” said Lady Tigers head coach Amy Webert.

The Quartzsite squad slowed play, directing the ball to the setter consistently, allowing them to run up big leads over the relatively inexperienced Lady Tigers.

“Bump, set, hit. That’s what they did,” said Emily Kuczynski. “That’s what we need to do more of.”

Kuczynski was the star of Game 2 with her work on the service line. After the Lady Scholars built an eight-point lead, Kuczynski brought the Tigers within one by serving four straight including one ace.

But the Quartzsite squad, led by Robin Helton, was able to get the side out and close out the scoring for the win.

“In that second game, we slowed things down, worked the pass, and that really let us get back in,” Webert said. “That’s not what we did in the third game, where we just attacked.”

Sherrie Hall served the Lady Scholars to a commanding 16-8 lead and Quartzsite never looked back.

“They took their time and we needed to. Our girls didn’t have their game faces on tonight,” Webert said.

The Lady Tigers head to Phoenix on Saturday, to take part in the 16-team Charter Athletic Association Spike It Classic Volleyball Tournament.

“We’ll have at least six game. So we’ll use it to work drills and some specific skills,” Webert said. “We’ll be doing repetition, repetition, repetition.”
