Two is the number for the Fighting Knights golf team this week.

Havasu played Cerbat Golf Course in Kingman twice in the last seven days and came away with a pair of second place finishes.

“They’re all right there. We just have bust through that magical line (of scoring under 40),” said Knights head coach Mike Washington.

Last Tuesday the Havasu teams scored a 232 to come behind the host Kingman Bulldogs 200. Dysart was third with 266 and Mohave fourth with a 280.

Dustin Caldwell led the way for the Knights with a 7-over 43 followed by David Hofstetter with a 45, Pat McSweeney at 47, Nick Masney at 48, Garrett Luzzi with a 49.

Playing but not scoring in the team totals was Robert “Butch” Gregg with a 44, Steven Stanovich with a 48 and Jefferey Hillaker with a 51.

In the second match Wednesday, again Kingman came out top on their home course with a 206, followed by Havasu at 223, Liberty 269 and Mohave at 279.

Washington used the two no-regional matches to get work for his team, so this time he ran Brad Lester, who led the team with a 4-over 40. Eric Gedalje was second for the Knights with a 41, Blake Bradley scored a 44 and both Nathan Wegner and Jordan Ehgoetz scored a 49.

Playing but not scoring for the team was Nick Butler with a 50 and Lucas Hahn with a 51.

“We wanted to get the younger guys some experience,” Washington said about bringing the extra players. “This gave the underclassmen a chance to play in a match play setting.”

The two’s continue this week as the Knights play a pair of 18-hole rounds Friday and Saturday in Paige at the Lake Powel National Golf Club.

Friday’s round is practice and Saturday’s will count towards team scoring.

“We know they have the shots, we’re focusing on course management. How to attack certain golf courses,” Washington said. “We’ve played a lot of matches and tournaments but according to the calendar it’s midseason. So we’re looking at putting out the best five or six out there each time. To put out the best team.”

Play starts Friday at 3:30 p.m.
