Knights head coach offered good news and bad news following a four-team match at the Courses at London Bridge Golf Course Tuesday.
Eric Gedalje, Brad Lester and Nick Masney all finished the nine-hole round with a 40 to lead the Lake Havasu High School golf team to a 40-stroke victory.
Havasu finished with a team score of 167, followed by Kingman at 207, Bullhead City Mohave 217 and Buckeye at 236.
“The two seniors are really coming through,” Washington said. “It’s crunch time and I’m glad they’re able to do it.”
The “seniors” are Lester and Gedalje, who have been leading the way for the Knights all season long. Both scored 4-over 40 along with Nick Masney.
“Today I said I wanted to hit every green,” Gedalje said. “I knew if I did that I’d have a good round.”
Lester started Tuesday going out-of-bounds and finishing with a double bogey on hole No. 1. Then shot two-over the rest of the way.
“I was hitting my driver good and my short game was good,” Lester said. “I was saving pars with my chipping.”
Garrett Luzzi was the fourth scorer for Havasu with a 47.
Havasu also played two JV teams, which, if scores counted, would have finished in second and fourth Tuesday.
“We’re just playing our game,” Luzzi said about the success he and his fellow freshmen have been having for the varsity Knights this season. Fellow frosh Butch Gregg and Nate Wegner both shot a 45 for the JV.
And playing the number of varsity tournaments, he said, has him and his fellow freshmen in the right frame of mind for regionals.
“I’ve seen the pressure now and how to relate to different courses. So if I go to regionals, I think I can be ready,” Luzzi said.
The Knights Next head to Phoenix Tuesday followed by two days in Kingman next Thursday and Friday.
