Tea party: Thousands show up for protest

An estimated 2,000 to 2,500 people marched across the London Bridge Wednesday as part of Havasu’s own “tea party” tax protest.

Jillian Danielson Photos/Special to the News-Herald Thousand of Republicans and Democrats alike rallyed around the London Bridge Wednesday to protest high taxes and government bailouts.

After the march, several hundred lingered on the bridge and around the gazebo below the Island Mall to hear firebrand speeches and patriotic songs.

March organizer LaJuana Gillette elicited frequent cheers and applause as she read from the dozens of signs protesters were waving in the crowd. One sentiment seemed to sum up the event particularly well: “Congress, do you hear us now?”

Gillette, who serves as the Mohave County District 3 director for the Republican Party and the president of the London Bridge Republican Women, said she wasn’t surprised by the turnout based on the feedback she’s been receiving over the past couple of weeks.

“I was so excited to see that it really was everybody,” Gillette said. “It didn’t matter what they were. There were Democrats here.”

" I am so tired of hearing one party bash the other. Our current financial position in this country is the fault of both parties, not "Bush", not the democrats, not the republicans. It was greed, plain and simple. As far as the deficit left by Bush, does anyone consider the financial impact left by 9/11, the two wars, hurricain Katrina?
Currently there are too many changes happening too fast. Add these constant changes and constant daily stress to the current financial crisis and you have fear and insecurity. People need to work together and stop dividing the country more than it already is. "

Progress CAN be made in a civilized way. I am not judging you but I do feel bad for your hatred of others, who do not beleive the same as you! No wonder this country is in a mess! Tree huggers claim to want to help others, but only if it fits there definition of who needs help! The DOW is down again today. Maybe obama should stay out of the limelight for awhile, as the market certaily doesn't like what he is doing either. I want to buy another house, but I won't as long as he continues to bankrupt us! " There is no "bad timing" to voice your opinions and concerns. After all, isn't that freedom the reason we live in America? IT IS BETTER LATE, THAN NEVER! As far as obama making friends with other countries, maybe he should be more concerned about his fellow Americans! I am beginning to wonder IF he IS concerned about US??! SOME OTHER COUNTRIES DON'T BUY INTO HIS BIG SMILE AND HANDSHAKE, SUCH AS BOLIVIA. They say his actions don't meet up with his words. I WANT OUR COUNTRY TO SUCEED!! I WANT OUR COUNTRY SAFE FROM TERRORISTS! I like many others, see our country going down the wrong path. No the Republicans we voted in are not all without guilt. But can you at least admit, that neither are all the Democrats? I just have a grudge against lawlessness! All anyone has to do to be happy, is live within the laws. So many problems would be avoided or solved! There is always someone or someplace out there you can go to for help. I know you are all going to get whacky on me, but I am going to say it anyway. "WHEN GOD CLOSES A DOOR HE OPENS A WINDOW." Keep your mind open and "listen" to HIM! "

" I know it may sound wishy-washy,but I agree with "dubld". This was just wrong timing. When I protested Bush's bailouts, some of my friends called me a bleeding heart liberal. I am far from being a liberal; for that matter, I have not been a voting Democrat since I was first eligible to vote(decades ago). All I am saying is if you are protesting what is going on now (I don't agree with it either), to so. Just leave out the rhetoric about Obama's citizenship, racial make-up, etc. because it does not matter now. He is elected and until, if and only if, he is impeached. there is not to do about it. Let's just work to make sure he and Congress is doing the correct things for AMERICA. America should be placed first before Iran, North Korea, China, etc. Because if we do not take care of ourselves now, who knows what or where we may be in the future. Chinica, Meximerica?. I hope this does not sound racist, but Americans have worked hard and some have given the ultimate sacrifice to let us be what we are. We have freedoms that a lot of other countries are envious of. Sorry about the rant, but I don't want to see America and every thing I have worked hard over the last three decades go to crap. "

I'm all for free speech but you have to consider the logistics of demonstrating publicly, it carries huge responsibilitys.
The main message behind these events was not clear & concise, it confused a lot of independents, a lot of democrats & quite frankly, a lot of republicans. "

They were telling them that they do not agree with the bailouts! We called and told them do not vote for the bailout. WE have been doing things. Talking, Talking and Talking. Well, it is about time someone did some walking! You all call it sour grapes because we disagree with our president. However, when democrats or anyone else trashed talked Bush then it was freedom of speech! I will not trash talk MY President. I will not trash talk Democrats. You are allowed to disagree and so am I. President Obama is not the man I voted for. However, as PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA the BEST darn country in the universe I expect the best of him and from him. Irene did you know people watched Fox News coverage of the protests by a 3 to 1 margin over any other network? Do you know liberal, left leaning newspapers are failing across the country in cities like Seattle and Denver, and in trouble in places like New York and Washington and elsewhere? CNN is way down in ratings and it is a wonder MSNBC is even profitable. Olberman got blown back to sports. Did you notice all racist comments, insults, and ridicule came from people who seem to be on your side? Did you notice liberal journalists a.k.a. propaganda agents did not report but attacked participants on live television? While I was left with no one to vote for this past election I am glad Obama was elected. The GOP used to stand for something, now they're just swimming in the same spineless, money-wasting, Constitution shredding cesspool that the Democrats have been in for a LONG time. Just goes to show you who the pot calling the kettle black is! I never said, I refuse or dind't like to pay taxes. I support many plans. I don't like so much spending it will leave our grandchildren paying it off. Obama has spent more in a few months than all of our other Presidents put together. It has nothing to do about race as so many of your keep insisting that it does. I paid into s/s like everyone else. So whomever is recieving it, deserves it. I don't like to HAVE to take Medicare, but it is forced on me, even though I have an excellent health care plan! Have the billions on welfare paid taxes into anything? Yet they get free money. Maybe you can yell at them for awhile. Speaking of YELLING, everyone uses caps once in awhile. Don't be a blogger natzi! As far as watching tv, just more of your natzi ways!!! So far I am still free! No one is complaining about necessary and controlled spending as some have referenced. If you really believe the Government has been responsible with your tax dollars and the bailouts truly ONLY include monies to stimulate the economy I honestly don't know if you really have been paying attention to what the government has been doing! The Lake Havasu school district has to lay off at least 20 teachers for the upcoming school year. The city has had layoffs and pay cuts. Nobody wants to pay any extra for the sewer expansion. The stimulus package (which Republicans see as more taxes) will help to fix all of this, yet people are still complaining about it.

Somebody please, PLEASE explain how to fix our problems without some government intervention. "

" Great turnout HAVASU!! This has been building for a long time, the majority has not been happy with Washington because the politicians have failed us for decades and we have finally been pushed too far. Most of us are sick and tired of government doing what they want, as they have shown it isn’t about the people but about their own interests. They continually ignore the people, ignore the constitution and are more worried about being politically correct than doing the right thing for our Country.

This is only the beginning. Give Obama a chance? I ask you, why should I or anyone who opposes big government give him a chance? He is a politician first and he has shown in this short time that he is about and working towards more government spending, control and taking away our rights, all of which equates to bigger government!

The Tea Party’s were about the role of government and accountability to the people. The bailouts were the focus because it isn’t change but a continuance of the irresponsible spending that has gone on for decades. "

The 1% of the highest income Americans are behind this "Tea Party" nonsense, as they do not want to give up the tax breaks they received under George Bush. The wealthy have done nothing for you, nothing meaningful has trickled down, but you sure are doing something for them! Perhaps you could protest the poor wages in this town, or perhaps the cost of less-then-average medical care at our local hospital. Face it...you are always going to pay taxes! AND if you think you are protesting the bail-outs, try letting our nation's banks go under and see how fast countries like China start dumping American Dollars and how the three bucks in your pocket will then be worth twelve cents. Please don't be so self-absorbed, protest something you understand. Turn off Fox…Support the Obama Administration as it is in your best interest…or do you really know a Republican that is going to drop-off food to you when your new residence is Winsor Beach! "

I was against a lot of the bailouts myself but the taxes? C'mon, I've been paying taxes my whole life & they've never gone down.
Taxes are what keep this country from falling into an abysmal hole. Sure they're not all spent the way people like.
Personally, I'm for a flat tax across the board, taking an equal percentage from every individual & business entity. For people that don't pay taxes? They should get harsh punishment. For people that choose to live off of the welfare system & not work? They should get a box with with water & rice.
At any rate, there has got to be some middle ground we can all agree on, or at least should be.
Will this happen in my lifetime? No way. For people that hate Obama so much, you should be glad someone like me isn't in office. It could be a lot worse. "
