Cleaning up the Channel
Beer cans, toilet, shopping carts pulled from Lake Havasu’s waters

It looks like Bud Light wins the award for most popular beer cans found at the bottom of Bridgewater Channel.

Thirty-eight divers pulled piles of trash — including a toilet, shopping carts, a bicycle frame, unopened bottles of tequila and mounds of red and blue plastic cups — from the clear blue waters of the Channel during the second annual Underwater Cleanup organized by the Lake Havasu Divers Association.

Lake Havasu High School environmentalist volunteers helped clean aluminum cans to donate to local youth organizations to recycle.

Kathy Weydig, the association’s president, said the amount of trash pulled from the Channel was about the same as what was collected last year.

“We dive all the time out here, and we see this stuff,” she said.

Weydig received permits from Lake Havasu City and the U.S. Coast Guard for the event, because diving in the Channel is illegal.

The students who washed the mud off of the cans said they were surprised at the amount of trash last year, but this year — they knew what to expect.

“It makes me wonder why people have to be irresponsible and throw their trash in the lakes,” said 16-year-old Emily Wilson, a LHHS volunteer.

" what no bodies? I am impressed by the Student Environmental Council High schoolers who helped clean up after the california trash-you know the touristas who think that the channel is a place to drink until they void their wastes into the water. Every year they leave their "droppings" in the channel- no wonder it needs to be dredged.
sodom and go-have-another-drink are what type crowd we really want to be coming back for more? "

" Had I known about this event I would have helped. This is great and Cudos to the Havasu residents for helping but is is too bad that they are not privilidged to have access to walking all around the channel. Even Malibu movie stars cant stop the public from beach access so why cant I walk from the brewery to crazy horse without swiming in the midle of the channel half way ? it is not right "

" How disgusting! I can understand the cans and bottles (paying a deposit helps) but a toilet, bike frame, and shopping carts stinks of local trash. Shame on Havasuvians! Our kids shouldn't have to clean up after us...but I'm glad they have. Good Job, boys and girls, and Thanks!! "
