A two-vehicle collision occurred when a man attempted a U-turn in the 3300 block of South Kiowa Avenue while leaving a garage sale around 10 a.m. Sunday.

Jayne Hanson/News-Herald Photo. Local firefighters work to secure two vehicles involved in a collision Sunday morning on South Kiowa Avenue.

Daniel Martin, 46, of Parker, was cited for unsafe starting of a parked vehicle after he reportedly made a U-turn in his 1990 Chevy pickup into the path of an oncoming gray 2005 Ford Expedition. The driver of the Expedition, 50-year-old Leo Gill, of Lake Havasu City, was traveling southwest on South Kiowa Avenue.

In the same incident, Martin was arrested for allegedly operating a vehicle without an interlocking device and failure to comply after a record check showed he had a valid warrant for arrest.

Although River Medical ambulance service was dispatched to the scene, both drivers refused transport to Havasu Regional Medical Center, said Lake Havasu City Battalion Chief Mike Quijada, who was on scene.

Firefighter paramedics treated Martin for a laceration to his left arm scraped by glass during the collision, said Gabe Lowrance, Lake Havasu City police officer. Martin’s only passenger was his medium-size dog, Max, who was unharmed and picked up from the scene by a friend.

Gill received a laceration to his face as well as the back of his head. He was also treated on scene. There were no passengers in Gill’s vehicle.

Police are still investigating the accident and have not yet determined how fast Gill’s Expedition was traveling at the time of impact, Lowrance said.

Quote:Not all police agencies participate in the voluntary UCR program and therefore statistics for some cities are incomplete or absent. Some U.S. cities do not provide crime totals for certain categories. And some cities have been caught under-reporting and misreporting their crime totals, giving the false appearance that their communities are safer than they actually are. but I have lived worse places. " Man in the shadows is right.I wrote nice of Mr. Martin until I found out the facts. This guy is not your average person, he is a repeat offender with DUI record(s)and has had several warrants. He should of not been driving. A simple civil private property collision that should of ended with an exchange of information (ARS Title 28, and city codes) ended with the someone going to jail. Such is life. Waiting to hear if tonights collision on Acoma that ended with an airlift to Vegas was alcohol related (hopefully not). These incidents should be an eye opener for people who live in the ,"Havasu bubble" thinking Havasu is Paradise and no crime ever happens here. Close the shutters, turn out the lights and pray the bad guy doesn't come. Oh and there was another drive buy shooting last night. Most people think it doesn't effect them until it happens to them. They are the first to complain about cops and firefighters, but they are the first to call 911 when they don't have a clue or the mental capacity to handle a bad situation. There are sheep and there are sheep dogs. everyone should ask themeselves, "which one am I?" But that's just my opinion. "

" Why the hoopla about this collision people. Mr. Martin has an extensive criminal history just look it up on public access. Mr. Martin should not have been driving a vehicle without the interlock device period. Geez lets turn a collision thats non of our business inter a blog fight. "

" I am also happy that there were no serious injuries. But I do know what caused the accident. Obviously the pickup truck looks too close to the ground.

The truck definitely needs a lift kit, at least 40" tires and lockers front and rear LOL "

" Boomer, I have seen many people going about their busy days sauced! ie; going to the laundrymat, gas station's,going fishing, pickin up the kids from school and yes even yard sales and the swap meet. It was just last week I was at the post office and the guy behind me who I just saw driving next to me. Was on his 5th or 6th cocktail, and it was only 10am. Funny because he almost hit the car next to him when he parked crooked. While we were in line a good samaritan pulled his wife to the side told her she should drive. You might be surprised at how many people drive drunk in Havasu. Just a matter of time they will either get caught or worse kill someone. "

" An IID is court ordered to be installed on any vehicle subject drives, meaning the subject has been recently arrested for DUI. He drew attention to himself by pulling U-turn and getting into a collision, Then standard records check revealed a warrant and a court ordered interlock device, which is a restriction on his license. Driving any vehicle w/out this instrument will get you arrested. The U-turn was arbitrary because it could have been a simple traffic violation such as: failure to stop at a stop sign. The end result would have been the same for Mr. Martin. The warrant: failure to comply, means he may have missed his court ordered DUI alcohol classes or missed a court date. Mr. Martin may have been stone sober doesn't matter as these are separate charges. True, A lot of people who get DUI's aren't "bad" people. We all make mistakes and are held accountable (unless your name is Bill Clinton). Mr. Martin probly real nice guy just made a couple ooops's. All in all, no serious injury's and that's always a good thing. "

" Anyone who has had an interlock device or knows some one who has had one, knows the only reason they arent driving the car the device IS installed on is probably because THEY WONT PASS and be able to start the vehicle with the device in it,doesnt mean the driver was under theinfluence , means the device would detect alcohol the person may have consumed in the previous 6-10 hours? at any rate, the driver was in the WRONG for simply not using the car with the device he was legally supposed to be driving. "

" Boomer. What is the assumption? The paper reported he was arrested for operating a vehicle without an interlocking device. And that he had a RECORD of a Valid Warrant. All I did was answer curious's question as to what an interlocking device is. "

" Cal/Hav I have never seen anybody that goes to garage sales hitting on the jug. You sure are assumming alot. Most people that have a DUI interlock device, are just average people that have made a mistake by having one too many. You probably walk on water maybe even carry a cross once a week. "

    cal/hav wrote on Oct 26, 2009 1:05 PM:

" Now why did the paper not report"alcohol may have been a factor" like they do every boat accident.
An ignition interlock device or breath alcohol ignition interlock device (IID and BIID) is a mechanism, like a breathalyzer, installed to a motor vehicle's dashboard. Before the vehicle's motor can be started, the driver first must exhale into the device, if the resultant breath-alcohol concentration analyzed result is greater than the programed blood alcohol concentration — usually 0.02 or 0.04 per cent, the device prevents the engine from being started. The guy must have had a record. "
