Ryan, Sanchez win inaugural Havasu Halloween run

David Ryan and Kylie Sanchez topped a field of 69 runners that took part in the inaugural Recycled Halloween 5k Run and 2 Mile Walk at SARA Park Saturday.

Race Director Karen Opperud said called that turnout “excellent for a first year event. “Everyone was in high spirits – the spectators, volunteers and runners. I’m certain with as much enthusiasm as there was at this event it will certainly grow to become an annual tradition everyone will look forward to,” she said in a press release.

Runners were encouraged to dress in costume for the race and some turned out as Cinderella, Captain Underpants, the Skipper and his crew from Gilligan’s Island, several pumpkins and a tea pot.

Ryan was the first place runner, finishing in a time of 16:41. It was his second win in a row, after finishing first in the annual alumni run at the Mark Weston Invitational cross country event for Lake Havasu High School Sept. 26.

Sanchez was the top runner in the women’s category. She finished in a time of 23:29.

In addition to trophies, both received 25-pound pumpkins.

Net proceeds from the run will go to the Havasu Dream Track project, an effort to install a new all-weather running track at Lake Havasu High School.
