Donald Harold Bown, 84, passed away on Sept. 19 in Lake Havasu City. He was born on Dec. 23, 1924 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Robert and Iva (Utley) Bown.

Don was a star athlete in high school. He was the quarterback of the football team, the point guard of the basketball team and star of the track team. World War II was in full swing when he graduated high school. Don immediately joined the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Philippines and the Solomon Islands. When he returned home for the Pacific, he married his high school sweetheart, Ardyse Ann Holland on Aug. 5, 1945 in Glendale, Calif. They settled in Southern California, where they raised three daughters, Georgia Ann, Vicki Lee and Christy Lynn.

Don had been a funeral director in Anaheim, Calif., from 1946-1959. He was an executive of the Boy Scouts of America for 27 years and received an award as a 65-year veteran of scouting. Don was transferred to the Las Vegas Council of the Boy Scouts and moved to Lake Havasu City in 1976, where he later retired in 1986. He remained active in scouting, and became a back packing instructor at Mohave Community College. He also received an award from the Red Cross for many years of blood donations. Don was involved in the Havasu Campers and was active in the Rotary Club, selling Lake Havasu City dollars for London Bridge Days for many years. He was active in the Community Presbyterian Church in Lake Havasu City, and he and his wife were avid travelers of the United States and the world. Don also loved playing golf every Friday with his buddies.

Don is survived by his wife, Ardyse Ann Bown; daughters, Georgia Ann Robles, of Bend, Ore., Christy Lynn Stevenson, of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, brother and sister, and his daughter, Vicki Lee Buell.

Don’s family would like to say a special thanks to New Hope Hospice, especially Lisa and Ginger, for everything.

A memorial service will be held at Community Presbyterian Church, 3450 Chemehuevi Blvd., Lake Havasu City on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Words of wisdom and inspiration will be expressed by Pastor David Bybee.
