BULLHEAD CITY — Fighting Knights head coach Larry Kiszczak said his team will have to manufacture runs to win this season and that’s exactly what they did Friday.
Globe was able to get on the board first, scoring two off Havasu starter J.J. Dukes in the top of the first inning. Havasu knotted the game with two runs in the third and then in the fifth and final inning, the Knights’ manufacturing team went to work.
Javaree Thompson reached on a bunt single and advanced when Dukes also successfully singled on a bunt. Havasu executed a double steal to put Thompson on third and then Garrett Heath knocked him in with the game-winning RBI single.
“That was more like the game we expect to be playing this season, “Kiszczak said. “I’m pleased with the way we executed.”
Dukes went the distance, pitching all five innings. He gave up one earned run on four hits and one walk. He also struck out six.
“He looked really good, considering that was his first start of the year,” Kiszczak said.
In the day’s first game, it was River Valley exploding for seven runs in the first inning en route to a 9-2 win in four innings over Havasu.
“We worked ourselves into good hitting counts and hit the pitchers well,” said River Valley head coach Adam LaCasse.
Dust Devils’ leadoff hitter Robert Cooper went 3-for-3 on the day, with two runs scored and one RBI. Cody Taylor was 2-for-2 with an RBI and seven of nine starters had a hit in the game.
Robbie Ayres earned the win for River Valley, throwing three plus innings and giving up two earned runs on six hits and two walks. Joe Renfro gave up no hits in one inning of relief work.
Havasu scored one in the second when Nick Moran walked, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Tanner Vidovich single.
Vidovich got his second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth when he drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Max Dreager took the loss for the Knights. He gave up seven runs — four earned — on seven hits and two walks. He struck out one.
“He’s another of those basketball players that have just gotten here and they’re three weeks behind,” Kiszczak said. “He threw strikes but he was having timing issues with his curve so they could sit on his fastball. That’s something we can work out in practice though.”
In Thursday’s late game, the Knights defeated Kingman 8-3 in a three inning game called for time. The gives Havasu a 2-2 record heading into the tournament’s final game today, against Gila Valley Region opponent Yuma. On Thursday, Yuma opened the tournament with a no-hitter, beating Kingman 7-0.
Today’s game at Mohave High School starts at 11 a.m.
