Havasu martial artists earn honors

Lake Havasu Black Belt Academy LLC awarded Tanya Swearingen her ATA First Degree Black Belt during graduation ceremonies Feb. 20. Swearingen, who began her training more than two years ago, is the first adult woman to earn her Black Belt solely under the training of 4th Degree Black Belt Karen Fresh, academy owner.

Elite Martial Arts student Paige Grey was promoted to Yellow Belt in the traditional art of Kenpo Karate.

Seven Lake Havasu Black Belt Academy LLC students earned eleven medals at the ATA Region 118 Taekwondo Martial Arts Tournament in Phoenix, Feb. 6. David Wright first in Sparring and third in Forms; Swearingen took second in Sparring and third in Forms; Tristan Wright, 4, earned both a Tiny Tiger Award for Green Belt and a Tiny Tiger Award for Weapons; Robert Minden, 4, earned a First Place Tiny Tiger Award for White Belt; Brody Stanton, 7, finished second in sparring and third in Weapons; Erin Stanton, 4, earned a First Place Tiny Tiger Award for Orange Belt; and Kelly Boucher, 8, earned fourth place in Forms.

And in a photo published Friday, showing Arevalo Academy award winners from the Compete Nationals Feb. 26-28 in Ontario Calif., six names were omitted. Also returning with trophies from the multi-discipline martial arts competition were Jimmy Carstenson, Christian Fonte, Andie Levene, Michael Reckinger, Jared Thomas and Katie Weeks.
