KINGMAN — Kingman Academy of Learning scored four unanswered goals in 10 minutes in the second half of play to rally to a 5-2 win over Telesis at Centennial Park in Kingman Tuesday.
Kingman’s Kaylan Hinton put one past Telesis keeper Tony Hill to tie the game but the Garrett-Gomez connection worked their magic one more time — again on a throw-in — to give Telesis a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
The start of the second half was all Kingman though, as KAOL forwards pressed the attack on the Telesis defense and kept the ball on Telesis side of the field. Kingman’s Austin Cone scored his first of two goals to tie the game on a direct kick. Then Rikin Patel scored the game-winner on a crossing pass in front of the net that Telesis failed to get a foot on.
Bret Hoague added another KAOL goal of a rebound that Hill couldn’t quite control and Cone scored his second of the game on a direct kick blast from about 35-yards out, that curved just past Hill’s hands to the right.
‘I thought they did awesome,” said Kingman head coach Erica Limon. “They played their game and brought it up to the level they are capable of.”
Telesis switched keepers, moving Gomez into the net and putting Hill in as left striker and the switch allowed the Tigers to once again get the ball into the KOAL zone. But Kingman keeper Ethan DuBarton made a trio of saves on corner kicks, including one he just barely brushed aside on a Garrett header, which preserved the win.
“It was our first game and we’re building on fundamentals,” said Telesis’ head coach Avery Leckrone. “In the first half I thought we were more energized while in the second we started to slack a little and we didn’t listen. And that was the 10 minutes where we lost the game. But at the end we started listening again and I saw improvement.”
The win puts Kingman at 1-1 on the season. Telesis is at 0-1 following the season opener.
Next up for Telesis is another road game, this time in Mohave Valley against Mohave Accelerated Learning Center. Game time Thursday is 5:30 p.m.
