Block parties encouraged

Lake Havasu City citizens will soon be given an official chance to meet their neighbors during Havasu Night Out block party scheduled 5-8 p.m. March 9-10.

The first night will focus on neighborhoods on the south side of town, while the second will focus on the north side. The township areas will be divided at McCulloch Boulevard.

“It is an opportunity for neighbors to get together to ask questions of law enforcement about traffic or active types of crime in their neighborhood,” said Havasu Night Out organizer Maria Mitchell, of Lake Havasu City Police Department.

The two-day event will show residents the different types of services available in the community as well as rally neighbors, Mitchell said.

Agencies on board with the event include Lake Havasu City Police Department, Lake Havasu City Fire Department, H.A.V.E.N. Family Resource Center, and Western Arizona Humane Society.

Representatives from each agency or organization will visit the neighborhoods and be available to provide information.

Fire department representatives can answer questions about safety and hazard questions.

H.A.V.E.N. representatives will share information about resources available to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault crimes as well as how the Food For Kids program helps under-privileged kids in the area, Mitchell said.

WAHS, which provides animal control for the city, will have representatives on hand to discuss how to best care for animals in the summer heat, how to best handle animals around children and seniors, and shed light on local laws pertaining to pets, the organizer said.

The cluster-type gatherings around town also would be an excellent time for neighbors to discuss organizing a neighborhood watch program among each other if they have not already done so, Mitchell said.

“We do get calls about suspicious activity … and because of those calls here in Lake Havasu City, we have caught guys with back packs who had already broken a window with their burglary tools,” Mitchell said.

Becoming familiar with neighbors is not only to fight crime but to also provide a network system for neighbors to help each other out, Mitchell explained.

“There are a lot of citizens in Lake Havasu City that have no family that live here. In an emergency they will have to depend on their neighbors and friends,” she said.

Mitchell works in many capacities for the local police department including interpreter, sex offender registration, neighborhood watch and crime reports coordinator.

Havasu Night Out is a spin-off of National Night Out, which is scheduled Aug. 3, 2010, in other parts of the United States, according to the host organization’s site www.nationaltownwatch.org.

Havasu Night Out is scheduled in March because of its more moderate temperatures. The heat in August would make the gathering more difficult. This is the second year for the block party, the organizer said.

Night Out programs demonstrate that partnerships and coalitions can be built and nurtured at the community level for the purpose of establishing cost-effective crime control strategies, according to the event information provided by the police department.

Existing Havasu Neighborhood Watch captains and co-captains are encouraged to notify their associated watch groups and Mitchell no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The event also will accommodate anyone who is interested in participating. Those who are interested need only gather with neighbors in front yards or garages.

If interested participants who are not part of a watch group or know of a neighborhood watch captain in their area, contact Mitchell at 928-855-1171.

" Blue, well we called and got the list of the 18 houses hosting the parties, and there were fire dept, pd, and many others all around. Not sure where you live, but you should have asked for the addresses. Sorry you missed out. "

There's a reason Crystal Beach, is "Crystal Meth" and Desert Hills is "Desperate He**" That's where most of the Northern portion of Mohave county and Western California get it's meth manufactured and distributed from (hello Vagos and He**s Angels). I can tell some just have blinders on, live in a bubble, or just have no clue. Welcome to Paradise. "

" Northbound-You continue to imply that it's visitors that bring in the drugs. I got news for you. It's sons and daughters of havasu as well dealing in drugs or just taking them. I know you don't get out very often or go to bars for that matter, but it's everywhere. Sad but true. "

" I love police officers and welcome any MCSO that want to come in. I think professionals doing a job protecting people is great example for the LHCPD to follow. Maybe the LHCPD can have a BBQ and invite the MCSO to come teach them that police work is a not for profit endeavor? "

" When I moved into my neighborhood over a year ago, we loved the fact that most our neighbors waved, came to meet us, had BBQ's and stuff. We became fast friends. Everything was great! Then one of the neighbors started a Neighborhood Watch. They installed Web Cam's on their front porch, had eavesdropping devices, called the cops everytime one of the neighbors had a BBQ, and heaven forbid someone start their motorcycle! The amount of times these people called the cops is insane. No one was doing anything wrong OR illegal and all these people suceeded in doing was keeping the police from places they were NEEDED. No. I won't be going to our neighborhood watch block party. I hope everyone else lives in a neighborhood where it's safe to have a life and friends. "

" have you even bothered to call them to see if they got the letter or to ask if you can speak to them re: the letter? And how about those visitors that bring dope into our community and get caught with their dirty dope? Do you think they should be brushed off and told to have a good time? Just because people come to town and spend money doesn't give them the right to break laws and expect no cites. "

" When you got neighbors like my old neighbors, you don't want to know them. They started the neighborhood watch claiming it was because of my husband. Wrote letters to my landlord trying to get us evicted, said shot off guns in our neighborhood by the high school. They're crazy, I say. And yes we just moved because of them. Very sad, we loved all our other neighbors. I think she secretly wanted my husband. "

That Statistic are just a coincidence --(300%) citation increase, that they don't harass tourist etc. Besides your the one that wants to see me and haditwithhavasu. Or did you type before you thought. Just till me the street and the time. See you there. "

" To DUBID: From what I have heard, they have a list of all the gathering on each side of town and will coordinate with all attending agencies how to visit all of the gatherings. Last year's event was very well organized and I am expecting the same this year. "

" dubld it states in the article Representatives from each agency or organization will visit the neighborhoods and be available to provide information.
The event also will accommodate anyone who is interested in participating. Those who are interested need only gather with neighbors in front yards or garages. It would be nice if it was a good turn out. I leave for work at 5am and can't believe the amount of homes with no outside lights on. It's so much easier for neighbors to look out for eachother if everyone has outside lights on, now maybe some of them are motion lights which is a good idea too. My neighbors had a home invasion 2 years ago resulted in 10 people getting arrested, I didn't see anything but my dogs did which let me know something was not right. "

dubld wrote on Mar 1, 2010 10:40 AM:

" lol...I can see the tickets & fines for loitering & having a BBQ in our cul-de-sac! Probably not, but still humorous. I'm all for knowing your neighbor & looking out for somebodys good but the extent that some of these people go with the spying & reporting is ridiculous.
The article doesn't say, will these agencies be driving down random streets looking for gatherings? "

" Hey what a great idea now I wanna see calhav and haditwithhavasu and all you other law enforcement bashers out there so you can get all your anxitiy out and your questions answered. How about it rat won't this be just the perfect 2nights for them? "
