Maiya Carlson said she likes it when guest readers come into class.

The third-grader in Wendi Lylte’s class at Oro Grande Elementary School had plenty of guest readers to choose from Wednesday, as 32 members of the Lake Havasu High School basketball, football and volleyball teams were on hand to take part in Read Across America Day.

“I like it, Carlson said. “We had guest readers last year.”

Lytle’s second and third grade class was treated to stories read by Brandon Neskahi of the basketball team, Korinne Ruhnke of the volleyball team and football player Max Delia’s reading of “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.”

“I liked the cookie one,” said second grader Jayden Azar. “I liked how he got more stuff.”

Coordinating the effort was Christine Musselman for Oro Grande and high school coaches Scott Becker, Marsha Becker and Karl Thompson.

“Reading is such an important, fundamental skill. And the athletes are such great role models. These athletes are all great students and good kids,” said Marsha Becker. “Hopefully, this will get the (elementary school) kids interested and they’ll learn the importance of reading.”

" Lots of great photo opportunities took place. I am unsure of why this was the featured picture. The kindergarten and hight school students were doing the Tooty-Ta dance....and in the song it says "tongues out, elbows back, feet apart, knees together...a tooty-ta, a tooty-ta, a tooty-ta-ta." It is a kindergarten favorite, but I agree without any background it doesn't explain itself well. All I can say is the time spent on reading on campus yesterday morning with the athletes was memorable for all involved. "

" Is that really the best picture that could be found? Looks more like they just served a nasty school lunch. "
