Storm sweeps across Havasu

An unusual storm swept across Havasu Sunday morning and after-effects will be seen through the week, according to AccuWeather representatives.

A low-pressure system moving across the state is expected to continue bringing “pretty good winds and rains” through the week, AccuWeather Meteorologist Mike Pigott said Sunday afternoon. The system caused minor flooding throughout the city and local officials expect some showers and slightly cooler temperatures through the week.

“The system will clear out sometime (this morning),” Pigott said. “But another system is looking to dive into the region late Tuesday. So I’d say you can expect more gusty winds and another round of showers.”

Pigott said that Havasu typically sees brief showers because the city is usually at the bottom of lower pressure systems moving through, but the system moving in over the weekend moved lower, causing more constant rains.

“I think with this next cold front coming through Tuesday and Wednesday that we could see some smaller, brief showers that are more expected but it will get a little cooler,” Pigott said. “I think we should see highs around the low to mid-70s through Friday. The normal for this time would be about 75, so 5 degrees is a bit of a difference.”

Pigott also advised that lows might drop down into the upper-40s or low-50s through the beginning of the week.

It was not immediately clear if the weather contributed to a single vehicle wreck early Sunday morning that left the driver severely injured. The crash occurred about 1:20 a.m. Sunday on State Route 95, about seven miles south of the city, according to a press release.

“The vehicle appeared to have rolled several times coming to rest on its wheels with the occupant still inside,” a spokesperson said in the release. “A helicopter was called to the scene to transport the patient to a level one Trauma Center in Las Vegas for serious injuries. DPS was on scene and is investigating the (crash). It appears alcohol may have been a factor in this (wreck).”
