Large trucks could face restrictions

If the City Council and staff can figure out a few complications, large trucks on the uptown section of McCulloch Boulevard may be a thing of the past.

The council is scheduled to discuss possible large truck restrictions on the main street, between Acoma Boulevard and Smoketree Avenue during a work session at 5 p.m. today at City Council chambers in the police facility. The city has “the legal authority to impose additional restrictions on traffic as it relates to several Arizona Revised Statutes,” according to a memo from the city attorney’s office.

New restrictions should only apply to semi trucks, not pickup trucks, Vice Mayor Don Callahan said.

“What I’m hoping we can accomplish is get the big truck traffic eliminated … between say 7 a.m. and midnight,” Callahan said. “The goal of this is to make the street much safer. I’ve seen more than one come to a screeching halt (at a few intersections). The effort here is to make it more pedestrian friendly and I think this is a good step.”

Interim City Manager Charlie Cassens said council will need to consider a few things before making the decision.

“I believe the original request (from council) was to find out if the city could limit truck traffic on McCulloch. The answer is yes, we can,” he said. “But this will launch the discussion into whether that’s a good idea.”

Interim Public Works Director Mark Clark said staff had a few concerns about the application of the suggestion.

“The only concern staff has is any type of restriction will require enforcement or signage to be posted,” Clark said. “That definitely requires determination of enforcement and the issue will be how reasonable any of the restrictions are to business.”

Main Street Association President Jeannie Nelson said she doesn’t see enforcement as a problem.

“I have found that there is such a spirit of cooperation on Main Street,” she said. “We are good at policing ourselves and I think we could handle it with simple understanding. Everybody sort of shares the same vision on Main Street and we’re all working toward one goal.”

Councilman Dave McAtlin agreed that enforcement might not be necessary.

“I want to wait to hear the discussion there, but I am in favor of reducing the traffic. We need to try to get some of the congestion off of McCulloch,” McAtlin said. “I would rather do something that’s more of an educational route and try to do it with signage without enforcement. I wouldn’t want to put something in place where people are getting tickets for something like this.”

" How many trucks a day are you talking about?

How many jay-walkers step out in the middle of the block? "

" Haha getoverit I agree they have messed up a good thing when they changed the parking to pul in parking. Wasn't that all because business owners thought they could have more customers along main street? I vote for NO parking on McC'blvd as get said make 2 lanes in both directions all parking in back. What is with wanting to close the street to big truck traffic till midnight? Who the heck is open past midnight to get deliveries other then Denny's and their truck comes in off Lake Havasu ave. Do you people in those big glass offices spend too much time staring out the window? Main street closes up shop by 6pm at the latest. Good grief just have the big trucks take the back streets. "

" I'm sorry... I did not realize there was an issue with semi's on McCulloch. We're down there all the time. I've wracked my brain and can't remember ever seeing even one...? We're opening a business down there and have been working our building, most of the delieveries I see go around Main Street. I could be wrong, but this seems like a waste of time and energy. Did we just 'create' a problem where none existed in the first place?

As for the size of the street, while I agree the 'pull in' parking should go, I like the two lane 'small town' atmosphere on McCulloch. It's one of the reason's we chose our location. Foot traffic is a great advertiser. "

" If Mainstreet is so good at policing itself then why not tell the people that deliver to do so in the back by way of the side streets and bug the folks who live on them. The Vice Mayor also made a comment that big boats should not use Mc Culloch. If they don't want traffic down Main Street close it! make the back of the buildings the front entrance.
I thought that street was a public street not a private one, to be used by all. If they want to restrict peoples movement then let them also maintain it. OH I forgot they can;t even maintain their parking lots in the back "

" OH MY GOD. getoverit said something that would actually help the traffic and safety situation on McCulloch. Something that would interest other readers just Happened . I actually agree with her. I better go get a beer, that was depressing. "

" Gee maybe if they didn't have the parking all messed up on McCulloch Blvd they wouldn't think of this as a problem. Get rid of the pull in parking and go back to parrell parking on McCulloch or better yet do away with all parking have everyone use their back lots and make main st a two lane road each way think of all the traffic we can have with 2 lanes each direction more people can get to where they have to go and more customers for our main street business. I for one hate parking on that street and use the back parking lots when I do my main street shopping. Or see my dr's. "

" Just like Havasu to complain about rigs. It's simple.Only food trucks as in markets should be allowed on main st. The rest take side streets. You want your food don't you. Do you think the stores are gonna have someone waiting around to receive after midnight? Then you have noise ordinances which prohibits trucks in the alleys from making noise for residents. So which way do you want it The streets aren't posted for rigs not to use them. Maybe the city should do away with trucks and Havasu residents drive into Bullhead or Kingman to buy their goods. "

" Our City Council at Work Again!! If there are big rigs going down McCulloch Blvd. it is obviously to make deliveries! Why don't you people work on Balancing Our Budget first! Creating Jobs! Welcoming New and Big Business into our City! No we want to concentrate on stopping any commerce that we already have going! "

" i do not see how restricting big rigs from going down mcculloch will help the city if the trucks are going down swanson or mesquite then that is going to cause congestion in those areas. i know why not just stop all of your commerce altogether. you really should ask what the drivers of the big rigs think of this idea. do you really think that if they had a choice to all of sudden stop or impede traffic that is what they want to do?? they do not make money by causing problems for cities. i am sure that ideally they would prefer to be able to have access with the least amount of trouble. after all time is money. the longer they take somewhere the less they get paid. and how does the big rig cause less "beautification" on mcculloch by driving through town? why would you want to alienate truck drivers? don't we have enough problems already? and until MIDNIGHT??? come most people are off the streets after 10 pm in this city. almost all of the businesses are closed by 8 pm. why midnight???? let me tell you something the big rigs going down mcculloch between 7 am and midnight do not keep me off of mcculloch. "
