A severed pinky toe in Bridgewater Channel Sunday was one incident throughout a rather quiet weekend so far.

Lake Havasu City on-duty firefighter/EMT Justin Bacon stationed on the east bank of Bridgewater Channel responded Sunday to help a young man in Bridgewater Channel who had severed the toe of his left foot.

“It wasn’t a prop cut, he cut it on part of the boat,” Bacon said. “It is severed.”

The man was brought onto the beach by boat and his friends had wrapped the injury in a brightly colored beach towel about noon Sunday.

Lake Havasu City Police Department helped firefighters and ambulance personnel during the incident.

The injured man was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center to be treated for his injury. His name will not be released.

Lake Havasu City Fire Department Battalion Chief Rick Felish, who began his 48-hour shift Sunday morning, said the previous shift didn’t have any major incidents to report.

“No, everything is pretty normal, kind of quiet from what I understand, he said. “There have been no deaths that I have heard of . Nothing big really going on.”

Upriver on the Colorado River about the same time, a man suffered a significant propeller-cut near Needles, Calif., said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Smith.

Smith also reported a relatively quiet Memorial Day weekend.

“During the whole operation so far, we have had four arrests,” Smith said. Three of the four arrests were alcohol related and one involved possession of marijuana. Smith, a 14-year law enforcement veteran on Lake Havasu, said this Memorial Day weekend was nothing like what it used to be.

“We have had lots of contacts (with boaters) though,” he said. Smith said SBCSD deputies check for registration, compliant boat operators and safe boating.

“It gives us a chance to take to the (boat) operators,” Smith added. “Most are not drinking or have designated drivers, so they are getting the message.”

Mohave County Sheriff’s Sgt. Doug Schuster said the crowds on Lake Havasu were behaving this year.

“There is quite a bit of traffic on the water, but historically speaking, this is one of the quieter weekends,” he said. “(Boaters) seem to be behaving themselves.”

The agency’s accident and arrest statistics are below normal for a Memorial Day weekend, he added. As of 4 p.m. Sunday, there were only four minor incidents that dealt with property damage.

“It has been a very good weekend for us so far,” Schuster said.

Lake Havasu City Police Sgt. Joe Harrold agreed.

“We are busy with calls for service. The volume is about what we expect for holiday weekend,” he said. “(Bridgewater) Channel is busy. It was full by 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. (Sunday) morning.”

Lake Havasu City Police Department had people 36 in custody for court Sunday morning.

“There were a significant amount of underage consumption and disorderly conduct arrests,” he said.

Harrold reported there were no major incidents. Late Sunday afternoon, five or six disorderly conduct incidents occurred simultaneously in Bridgewater Channel.

“(There have been) no deaths as far as I know, no serious boating accidents,” Harrold said. “It is going smoothly. There are just as many visitors, but their behavior seems to be better (this year).”

Bridgewater Channel closed twice Saturday afternoon because of boat congestion. Each closure lasted between 10-15 minutes. The air quality has been in the safe range so far this weekend, Harrold said.

" Just because he was transported to the hospital doesn't mean he wasn't flow out afterwards. Some times they will transport to the ER to stablize the patient to be flown out later. I'm sure glad no one was hurt too bad. "

" Sounds like revenues were down. The city's going to have to get creative but not in the inspection/enforcement arena. Evening concerts in the park when the channel normally starts to clear out? Something along those lines? I, for one, was happy to have left about $900.00 California dollars in support of AZ's immigration stance. Thnakx for the hospitality. "

" So.. Havasu Regional Medical Center can handle a severed pinky toe? Good to know. Although, I'm sure there were quite a few on the fence about just air evac that guy out to Vegas... "
