LAKE HAVASU CITY — The Lady Knights carried the Lake Havasu High School swim team to narrow victory over Mohave County rival Bulldogs Wednesday.
It was the first meet for both teams. And the first meet for Havasu’s new head coach Michael Parr.
“We did better than we anticipated. The kids really stepped up and delivered,” Parr said.
The Lady Knights were paced by Courtney Barker, who won the 200-meter IM (2:41.97) and the 500M Freestyle (6:21.00).
Havasu also got wins from Brianna Thorson in the 200M Freestyle (2:58.89) and Katie Hauchrog in the 100M Breaststroke (1:40.69). Hauchrog was also part of the winning 4x50 Relay team with Brittany Goldberg, Hanna Hoffman and Katie Northover.
Where the Lady Knight s really scored was in the number of second and third places. Havasu pulled in eight second places and eight thirds, compared to just three each for Kingman.
On the boys’ side, it was Jay Conway grabbing two wins for Havasu. He placed first in the 50M Freestyle (28.17) and in the 100M Freestyle (1:05.05).
The Knights only other first place finish was from Mic Scharbrough, in the 20M IM, a come from behind victory — in the breaststroke third leg — in a time of 2:30.23.
Havasu grabbed five second place finishes and eight thirds.
“I thought the boys showed how dedicated they are,” Parr said. “Jay had a great meet. And Caden Kirby did phenomenally in the 500M (second in 7:30.33). Plus Mic went out there with an injured toe and posted solid results.”
The Knights are back in the pool Tuesday, playing host to Yuma Cibola. It’s one of two home dual meets against Gila Valley Region foes next week. On Thursday, Havasu will host Yuma Kofa.
Both meets will take place at the Lake Havasu City Aquatic Center and start at 4 p.m.
