PARKER — The Lady Broncs varsity volleyball team swept the Yellow Jackets Thursday night in Parker though the games were much closer than the scores might indicate.
Coaches for both schools stated it was still early in the season, and they are still learning what their teams need to work on.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets got off to an early lead, but then Parker caught up and took the lead. Palo Verde kept up the pressure, and the Lady Broncs were not able to pull away until late in the game.
In the second game, the Lady Broncs started with the lead, but then Palo Verde came back and came close to catching them. As in the first game, Parker didn’t surge ahead for good until late in the game.
In the third game, the lead see-sawed back and forth for the two teams until Parker took a 15-12 lead and started to pull away. The Lady Broncs put on a spurt where they scored 10 point for just 3 for the Yellow Jackets to put the game and the match away.
For the match, Autumn Garibay led Parker with 12 kills and Vanessa Olivares had nine. Dani Banuelos had 23 assists and served up three aces. Charlee Torres served four aces and Taylor Gonzalez served three.
“We’re still experimenting with our line-up,” Parker Assistant Coach Dan Maya said. “We’re trying to find out who we’ll go with when it really counts. Hopefully, it will surface soon.”
Palo Verde Coach Emily Chute said this was a good start for the Yellow Jackets’ season.
“We have a better idea of what we need to work on,” she said. “We enjoy playing Parker because they are always competitive.”
The Lady Broncs are now 3-0 on the season. Their next game will be Tuesday, when they host Mohave High School of Bullhead City. In an earlier meeting this season, the Lady Broncs topped Mohave, 3-1. The freshmen will play at 4 p.m. The junior varsity is scheduled for 5 p.m., and the varsity for 6 p.m.
In other volleyball action, Lady Broncs’ JV lost to Palo Verde’s, 2 games to 1. Palo Verde took the first game, 25-16, and the third game, 15-10. The Lady Broncs took the second game, 25-21.
