Lake Havasu City firefighters participated in a nationwide “Fill the Boot” campaign to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Jerry Lewis Telethon.
Havasu firefighter/engineer Ryan Felish said the collection was “going pretty well” Sunday.
The firefighters participate in the campaign each year, said the department’s Battalion Chief James Whitt.
The campaign is organized nationally through International Association of Firefighters to benefit Jerry Lewis’ Muscular Dystrophy Association’s yearly telethon fundraiser, the firefighters said.
According to www.mda.org, the 21-hour, star-studded variety show and telethon entertains, informs and raises funds for vital services and research programs. It will air Sept. 5-6 live from South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas. The telethon was first broadcast in 1966 and raised $1 million in its debut. The event has since grown. Last year, $60.5 million was raised in the effort, the website reported.
