LAKE HAVASU CITY — The Tigers would love to see the Knights lose tonight.

Not the Lake Havasu High School Fighting Knights — Telesis head coach Landon Merrill said he’s hoping Havasu beats La Joya — rather it’s the Tigers opponent tonight that Merrill wants to send home with a loss.

Telesis plays host to Phoenix Crestview College Prep at the Island Ballfield.

“This is a team we know nothing about,” Merrill said during practice Thursday. “I’ve called around and nobody knows anything about them. So our boys know this could be a tough game and they’re ready.”

Tonight’s game is the season opener for Crestview but Merrill said last year the Knights went winless. “But they lost games by one, two of five points, to bigger 3A schools. So we know they can play,” he said.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are coming off a 42-6 win over Superstition Imagine last week. Quarterback Tony Hill led the Tigers with 95 yards rushing on six carries, including a team-long run of 70 yards, and three touchdowns.

David Gilliam added 85-yards of rushing on five carries and two touchdowns while Fabian Damien scored once while running for 31-yards.

“Our running game has worked so good for us in the first two games, we haven’t had to go to the pass,” Merrill said. “But in practice, I think our passing game might even be better than our rushing.”

Defensively, Jimmy Hill led the Tigers with 15 tackles, followed by Gilliam with 12 and Jordan Clingerman with 10. Hill also had two sacks wile fellow lineman Clayton Eaton had four.

Jimmy Hill, Eaton, Javier Martinez and Jay Nelson all had one fumble recovery each.

“And our corners — Jordan Skinner and Jay Nelson — have done an awesome job of shutting down receivers,” Merrill said.

“We’re looking to continue that with this game. Put our best foot forward, keep the mental mistakes to a minimum and really go after it on defense.”

Tonight’s game, at the Island Ballfield, starts at 7 p.m.
