SAN DIEGO — The Lake Havasu Outrigger Canoe Club scored twice at the Crystal Pier Race in Mission Bay in San Diego May 9.
The team — sporting hot pink racing jerseys with the Hawaiian word, Kokonoi'e - which translates "to be strong after weakness" — competed against nine other women's teams and completed the five-mile race in 54 minutes 7 seconds, taking second place in their division. Lanakila-Redondo Beach posted a time of 51:13 to take first while third place, went to Ka Nai'A-Santa Barbara with a time of 55:11.
The club also entered a co-ed team in the afternoon races and, facing windy conditions and stronger waves, finished the 12-mile race in 1:30:58, missing out on a
medal by only 28 seconds.
Prior to San Diego races, the Lake Havasu Outrigger Canoe Club participated in the Tempe Towne Lake Regatta. The pre-season sprint races fielded teams from Southern California, New Mexico and Arizona. Havasu entered 16 races and had a successful race day, placing first in five races, second in five races and third in one race.
