Henry struck out nine and gave up just two earned runs but the Scholars were able to exploit Lady Tigers’ errors, and Quartzsite took the win, 14-2.

Quartzsite Scholars Academy defeated Telesis, 14-2 in five innings, in the first game of Telesis’ new softball program Saturday, at the Island Ballfield.

Carter got the win, giving up two unearned runs on five hits. She struck out five. Clara Boone tossed a 1-2-3 inning of relief, striking out one.

Defending state champs Quartzsite (2-0) came out strong, putting up three runs in the first inning. Liz Cossio reached on the first of Telesis’ 12 errors in the game, stole second the came around on another error. Robertson reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on an error then Carter singled and scored on Boone’s RBI hit.

Telesis got one back in the bottom half of the inning, as Henry reached on an error then came in to score on Shelby Kindle’s RBI triple.

Scholars put up four more in the second inning on four errors, a dropped third strike and Carter’s solo homer. Then got another four in the third on a walk, a single, a triple and Robertson’s two-run homer.

Henry set down Quartzsite 1-2-3 in the fourth and Telesis got one back in the bottom half of the inning when Nicole Sugamele reached on a single, advanced to second on a throwing error and then scored on Paytne Hinger’s RBI hit.

But Scholars closed out the game in the top of the fifth with three more runs on four errors and a dropped third strike.

Robertson finished the day 1-for-4 with four runs scored. In addition to her homer, she reached on a fielder’s choice and two dropped third strikes. Carter added three runs on a 2-for-4 day.

“The girls are picking up right from where we left off last year,” said Quartzsite head coach Christy Carter.

Sugamele was 1-for-1 for the Lady Tigers, with a single and a walk.

“Right now, with a brand new program, this all about taking small steps,” said Telesis head coach Chris Denny. “From February to today, I can see the progress they’ve made and now, in a game, I think the girls can see for themselves too. I’m proud. They played their hearts out.”

Henry went the distance in the loss, giving up four earned runs on six hits and one walk. She struck out nine.

“I think we’re moving forward,” Henry said. “We want our school to be noticed. The other sports have had success and we want the softball program to have that too; to be the sport that girls want to play.”

Telesis (0-1) is off until March 19, when they travel to Bullhead City for a three-team doubleheader with Bullhead City Mohave Accelerated Learning Center and Fort Mohave Builders Academy.

Scholars return to action March 22, when they host MALC.
