BULLHEAD CITY — For the second time in two days, a Telesis team was involved in a playoff no-hitter. Only this time, things didn’t go Telesis’ way.
On Monday, Telesis’ Austin Knight no-hit Surprise Arizona Charter Academy to advance his team to the semifinals in the baseball playoffs.
Glass was so dominant in Tuesday’s game, only two Telesis batters were able to put the ball in play — Shelby Kindle in the second inning and Paytne Hinger in the fourth — and both grounded out to second.
Glass struck out every other Telesis batter — 10 Ks in all — and it was only hitting Kindle with the pitch in the first inning that spoiled Glass’ perfect game.
“My curve was working for me today and my low outside,” Glass said after the game.
“When a pitcher of that caliber is on, there is nothing you can do,” said Telesis head coach Chris Denney. “Fundamentally, I thought this was the best game we’ve played this year against MALC. But their pitcher was just dominating.”
The No. 1 seeded Lady Patriots wasted no time in getting on the board, as Becca Bastyer smacked a two-run homer down the third base line in the bottom of the first.
The bottom of the second was all about the long ball, as MALC’s Alisha Mitchell led off with a solo shot down the left field line, four batters later Cassie Ketchersid cracked a three-run homer to right-center and Taylor Estrada hit a grand slam to center, part of an 11-run inning.
Telesis starter Dominique Martin saw just one more batter after that, as Ketchersid led off the bottom of the third with a rocket up the middle that smashed off Martin’s ankle and knocked her out of the game.
Nicole Sugamele came on in relief and got of the inning with just one run allowed. But the Lady Patriots took advantage f four hits, two walks and one hit batter in the fourth to rack up six more runs and end the game early on the mercy rule.
“I thought my team played well. They hit the ball solid and Taylor was really on,” said MALC head coach Shanda Weiler. “But hats off to Telesis. To even make the playoffs as a first year program is amazing.”
MALC (12-0) moves on to the semifinals, to face Scottsdale Prep (6-3) in the semifinals, Thursday.
“I wish that was us but I wish them good luck,” said Telesis’ Becky Escobar.
The loss closes out the Lady Tigers’ inaugural season at 3-8.
“I thought Nicole, coming on cold like that, did a great job,” Denney said. “She did what we all have to do and pick up a teammate that went down. And that performance is another thing we have to look forward to next year.
“I thought the seniors left it all out there on the field,” he continued. “And like I said before, I thought the whole team did an amazing job this year and I glad I was able to come along for the ride.”
