BULLHEAD CITY — The Patriots were rude hosts.
Tigers head coach Chris Denney said his team was taken out of the game early, as the Patriots’ Danny Warden ran roughshod over the Telesis defense.
“They’re a much bigger team than the (Kingman Academy) players we saw last week and I think our guys weren’t ready for that. And against a good team like MALC, who is so well coached, once they get the psychological edge it’s all over,” Denney said.
Compounding the damage was the loss of Telesis quarterback Tony Hill at the start of the third quarter.
“We don’t think it’s anything serious, but in a game like this, there was no way he was going back out there and risking serious injury and him losing the rest of his season,” Denney said.
Jordan Clingerman was called on to fill in at quarterback and Denney said the running back did yeoman’s work.
“It’s a position he’s not familiar with, he’s never practiced it, but he didn’t hesitate to do what he could. That’s exactly what you want from a captain — to step up do what needs to be done.”
The Tigers turned the ball over four times, fumbling twice and tossing a pair of interceptions.
“We’re disappointed but the real season starts now,” Denney said. “I don’t think the guys are going to lie down after this. We’ll learn from this and we’re going to come back Monday to start work on winning in conference.”
The Tigers will host 1A Yuma Harvest Pre at ASU at Lake Havasu Field, on Saturday.
