The last of four required approvals to bring an Arizona State University campus to Lake Havasu City went through unanimously.

The Lake Havasu City Council approved an agreement Tuesday night during its regular meeting to continue maintenance of the ASU campus’ athletic fields. The intergovernmental agreement, with the Lake Havasu Unified School District, Havasu Foundation for Higher Education and Arizona Board of Regents, requires in part that the city maintain the fields for a period of three years, city officials said. The city currently uses the fields at the former Daytona Middle School for programs and events throughout the year. Assistant City Attorney Kelly Garry said the other organizations must also approve the IGA as part of a final agreement.

“I want to congratulate ASU, the foundation and the school district for such a wonderful agreement,” said Mayor Mark Nexsen following the approval. “We have a great future together, so thank you very much.”

Regents Vice Chair Bob McLendon said Tuesday was an exciting day that included an ASU agreement with the Mayo Clinic, announced earlier in the day.

“Those are two pretty great things for Arizona on the same day,” McLendon said. “I would like to thank the city for giving folks a greater Arizona. And especially in this part of Arizona (for giving) greater opportunities for higher education.”

HFHE President Steve Greeley also thanked McLendon and representatives with the city.

“I really wanted to address the leadership of the city. It truly was a partnership that started with ASU, the foundation, the city and the school district,” he said. “Without the meetings that Mayor Nexsen and City Manager (Charlie) Cassens attended and without their vision and their creativity, this thing might not have gotten off the ground. So hats off to all of you and especially our city manager and mayor for making this a reality.”
