LAKE HAVASU CITY — With starting quarterback Tony Hill and starting running back Jordan Clingerman both out for Saturday’s game against Scottsdale New Way Academy, Telesis head coach Chris Denney said he was looking for some of his other players to step up.
New Way Academy (1-2) defeated Telesis (0-6), 32-6, at ASU at Lake Havasu Field.
“Anytime you’re without your starting quarterback and your starting running back, you know it’s going to be a hard night,” Denney said. “I just was hoping that some of the other guys would step up and fill those shoes.”
New Way put up one in the first quarter and scored again off a Tigers’ turnover at the start of the second.
Telesis then countered when Austin Weimer hit Jake Vickers with a 28 yard pass for the score.
But that was all the scoring the Tigers could muster in the game. New Way put up one more TD in the second — on a 74 yard run. Then added two in the second half. The final score coming off another Tigers’ turnover.
“And penalties killed us. I think we had more penalties tonight than we’ve had combined in all our previous games,” Denney said.
Both Hill and Clingerman are expected back for next week’s road game against Glendale Desert Heights. But even without the offensive catalysts, Denney said it’s up to the entire team who the season ends.
“This game could be a good character test for this team,” he said. “We hope the boys find a way to say ‘we’re better than this’ and find a way to dig themselves out of this hole. But it’s up to them.”
