" It should be free. "

" I worked for a YMCA years ago. We used to provided an overnighter event for the kids, while the parents played. For a small fee, the kids were provided games and such, and breakfast in the morning. Does the Rec Center do the same here? "

" Oh, goodness – can’t we just give it a whirl once and see how it goes? I’ve been to the last two uptown countdowns and the behavior of 99% of the revelers was just fine. I grew up around my parents’ friends, all of whom drank liquor. It was a good education for me to see what the difference between enjoying a few cocktails responsibly and drinking too much and acting a fool was. I don’t see that this is any different than bringing your kids into the channel aboard your boat any summer day.
Too cold? Really? My wife is from Minnesota – when she grew up they only closed school for the day if the temp was below 5 degrees by 7:30am, otherwise you walked to school. No wonder I met her on a ski trip. No wonder she loved Havasu when I brought her here during April and it was 84 degrees!
If you have children, the choice of whether to bring them is completely up to you – if you think it’s too immoral, or just too cold, the option to keep them away lies with you. Just remember, if you coddle and “protect” them their whole lives they will be largely uneducated as to how the real world operates, and possibly unable to decide the difference between right and wrong for themselves. If they rebel and make your life miserable in their adolescent and post-teen years, making your life miserable, look in the mirror. Raising your kids is your job – do it any way you please, but keep your morality to yourself. The Downtown Merchants Association is trying to keep this struggling town alive, and I applaud their efforts. This event has been a fun and safe way to ring in the new year, and I expect this year will be the same. If you want to find me Saturday night, I’m the guy in the gloves, hat and parka wandering Main Street with a cocktail in my hand enjoying the revelry with the same crazies I boat with all summer. "

" I have to agree also. If you can afford to spend $$ on alcohol then you can afford to spend $$ to make sure your kids are safe and warm. If it is as cold this year as it was last year, no child should be outside! The adults will be warm from all the alcohol they will be consuming but what will keep the kids warm??? And how many parents will forget to pick up their kids before going home due to being intoxicated? Kids need to be somewhere else, period, end of story! "

" The town finally gets something for our kids, which we have been asking for for years and then they are criticized. I believe if they have dedicated a "zone" just for kids and if adults can abide by the rules with in that "zone" great for the kids. There are little to no places for kids to kereoke! So I'm for it. "

" I totally agree, leave the children at home, because if you are drinking then you aren't taking care of your children. Get a babysitter! "

" New Year's Eve has always been an adult holiday---as it should be. Allowing parents to bring their children to an event where they and people around them will be drinking far more than usual (a martini glass is the symbol of Main Street's NYE party) is simply wrong. This is a "family event" that should not be taking place. "
