PARKER — The Lady Broncs rebounded from their loss Wednesday to Gila Ridge to defeat the Yuma Catholic Shamrocks, 53-33, in girls’ high school basketball action Friday night in Parker.
“They came out and they played hard,” he said. “The whole team played well as a team. The post players were right there. Everyone contributed.”
The Lady Broncs got off to a quick lead, and were ahead 18-5 at the end of the first quarter. The Shamrocks moved up the tempo in the second quarter, and Parker led at the half, 28-17.
The Shamrocks continued to chip away as the Lady Broncs’ lead in the third quarter, closing to nine points midway through the quarter. Then, the Lady Broncs moved things up a notch and started to pull away. By the end of the game, they had increased their lead to 20 points.
Yuma Catholic’s offense was led by Madison Brazeel, who scored 12 points, including making five of six free throws. Megan Zamora had 11, and Chelsea Mendenhall added 4.
Parker’s Rosalyn Carlyle led all scorers with 15 points. Shawni Laffoon had 10 points, Brie Miller had 6, and Fernanda Mejia scored 4.
The Lady Broncs are now 12-11 overall and 8-8 in AIA power points games. Voit said there had been some discrepancies in reports of their record on a national high school sports website, and this was because not all of their tournament game scores had been reported.
As for the post season, Voit said the Lady Broncs are still in the running.
“We’re sitting right there,” he said. “We’ll see if we can get in at state.”
The Lady Broncs’ next outing will be their final home game of the season. They’ll face the San Pasqual Warriors of Winterhaven, Calif. Jan. 31. This game is part of the double-header. The Lady Broncs will play at 5:30 p.m., while the Broncs’ boys’ team will play at 7 p.m.
In other basketball action: The Parker boys defeated Yuma Catholic, 59-42 in Yuma. The Lady Broncs’ junior varsity defeated the Yuma Catholic JV, 30-11, in Parker.
