A Lake Havasu City police officer shot a man at about 2:48 a.m. Wednesday outside a residence in the 3700 block of Lost Dutchman Drive, according to Lake Havasu City Police Department officials.

Police responded to the residence after a woman called 911 stating her boyfriend, later identified as Danny Haskell, 39, of Havasu, had a gun to his own head threatening to shoot himself. The woman told dispatchers Haskell also said he also was going to kill children within the residence.

Haskell fired one round while police were en route to the scene.

Officers arrived within three minutes after dispatched and heard screaming coming from within the residence. When Haskell exited the residence armed with a handgun, Officer Gregory Melodia, on officer on scene, took immediate action and fired his duty weapon. Haskell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial investigations determined 11 people were in the residence. All responding officers and 11 individuals were unharmed.

Kingman Police Department detectives responded to conduct an investigation.

Melodia, a 12-year law enforcement veteran with the local department, has been placed on routine administrative leave.

The investigation continues and additional information will be provided as it becomes available, police said.

A more complete news story will appear in Thursday’s edition of Today’s News-Herald.

Bill, They do, Thousands of times a day. You're just too ignorant to realize the media only shows you the ones where people die. Try picking up a book sometime and possibly educating yourself as to not look like a fool. "

" Bill I would like to know just where you get off saying what you did. What part of this story did you not understand? Maybe the part of him walking out of the house with a loaded gun, Or maybe the part of him going back into the house with the loaded gun threatening to kill the CHILDREN???? So you would rather the Officer walk up to him sit down on the ground and say (Hi, Dude let's talk about this ok) Not sure what rock you crawled out from under but I suggest you keep you thoughts to your self and go back under the rock. As a 911 dispatcher I sure would rather go home knowing my Officers all went home safe and sound and no children or innocient bystanders got shot or killed. We don't want to have to shoot anyone. But when an officer goes to a call like this it's gonna either be the Officer or the gunman. This Officer and his dispatchers did an outstanding job. I sure hope your never in a cituation where you plan to just sit an chat with someone who is out of control waving a weapon around. Havasu 2224 thank you well said. "

" Hey Bill516, there was an armed crazy guy that just shot rounds off in a house and threatened to kill children. You run in there and try to save the day without hurting the poor guy with the gun. This is the real world Bill516. You act like an idiot and run around shooting guns off and making threats, you will be dealt with accordingly. Go hug a tree or something. Good job police dept! Keep up the good work. "
