WICKENBURG — Parker’s Aaron Herder had to wait a while to learn of the decision in his championship match, but Javier Gomez made sure there was no doubt about his.
Herder, wrestling at 106 pounds — after waiting for a final decision — upset top-seeded Michael Casillas of Camp Verde, 10-9, in his championship match. But officials had to confer after the match apparently ended at a 12-9 decision to discuss whether points were erroneously awarded to Herder during the match. And it was finally determined that he actually did not earn two points. But it didn’t make any difference in the outcome.
Gomez, wrestling at 182 pounds, made certain there wouldn’t be any controversy in his championship match against top-seeded Alex Demyan of Yuma Catholic — winning that battle, 8-0.
Both Herder and Gomez were seeded No. 2 in the tournament, and both qualified for the Division IV state championships next weekend at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
But they aren’t the only Broncs going to the state championships.
Billy Escoto, also seeded No. 2, finished second to top-seeded Ryan Allred of Camp Verde at 120 pounds, after being pinned in the second period against the champion.
Third-seeded Sterling Welch at 285 ponds, finished fourth; third-seeded Cameron Booth at 145 pounds finished fifth; and fourth-seeded Dallas Wells at 195 pounds, finished fifth.
The top five finishes in each weight class (and the highest-ranked sixth-place finisher) qualified for the state tournament, so the Broncs are sending six.
As a team, Parker High finished fifth in the 15-team regional finals with 115.5 points – following fourth-place Wickenburg at 128.5, third-place Canyon State Academy at 130.5, second-place Yuma Catholic at 187, and champion Camp Verde at 222.5.
The other teams at the sectional match were Antelope (sixth), Seton Catholic (seventh), Bourgade Catholic (eighth), Valley Christian (ninth), San Pasqual (10th), San Tan Foothills (11th), Northwest Christian (12th), Phoenix Christian (13th), Valley Lutheran (14th), and Salt River (15th).
Herder is heading to the state finals as the No. 1 wrestler at 106 pounds from Division IV Section I with a season record of 43-11 — facing competition from the other two sections in the division. He had drawn a first-round bye at Wickenburg and then scored a first-period pin against Seton Catholic’s Seth Zimmerer before upsetting favored Casillas.
Gomez will head to the state championships as Section 1’s No. 1 wrestler at 182 pounds after pinning Wickenburg’s Steven Doom in 33 seconds of the first round, pinned Valley Lutheran’s Garrett Southwick in 27 seconds in the second round, and then pinned Canyon State’s Talon Higgins in the third period of the semifinals.
