Officials: Shooting victim likely died by own bullet

Investigations into a Lake Havasu City officer-involved shooting that proved deadly for 39-year-old Havasu citizen Danny Haskell early Wednesday has determined the shot to his head – by his own hand – more immediately caused his death than a single shot fired by the officer.

According to earlier reports, Haskell fired one round from a handgun that was pointed toward the floor while police were en route to an apartment in the 3700 block of Lost Dutchman Drive.

After officers arrived, two shots were fired. The first was from local police officer Gregory Melodia, the round struck Haskell’s torso area. The second round from Haskell’s gun struck his own head.

Kingman investigators, who were called in to conduct the investigation, said Friday they determined both gunshot wounds were fatal, with the self-inflicted wound to Haskell’s head being the most immediate. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident.

Kingman investigators also confirmed there were five adults and five children in the first apartment at the complex. The second adjoining apartment, which Haskell was attempting to enter when the shooting occurred, was occupied by two children.

“Haskell ignored commands by officers to stop and drop the gun,” Kingman investigators stated in a prepared statement. “Haskell was yelling at officers at which time he began to enter the second apartment.”

During the incident, Haskell’s girlfriend of six years called 911 at 2:48 a.m. Wednesday.

She told dispatchers Haskell was pointing a loaded gun at people and threatening to kill the children. Three officers arrived on scene at 2:51 a.m. and the shots were fired relatively quickly after arrival.

" Hey Bill516 did you notice in this story the gunman “Haskell ignored commands by officers to stop and drop the gun,” Kingman investigators stated in a prepared statement. “Haskell was yelling at officers at which time he began to enter the second apartment.”

Not only did he ignore commands to stop and drop the gun he was going to enter a second apartment with a loaded gun. What if you were inside that apartment and he managed to get past police into the apartment? You would be then yelling at the PD asking why they didn't stop him, Right "
