April 28, 1942
— June 3, 2013
Larry Eugene Van Engen, 71, passed away peacefully June 3, at the Polidori House in Lake Havasu City. He was born April 28, 1942, in Sioux City, Iowa, adopted as an infant by Herman and Nellie (Pap) Van Engen; he considered his adoption to be one of his greatest blessings. The family moved to Redlands, Calif., where Larry attended Redlands Christian School, graduating from Redlands High School. He married Nelda Blanch Van Stryland in Redlands, Calif., June 14, 1974. He was employed with San Bernardino County, moving through the ranks from laborer to district supervisor. He retired after 32 years in the fall of 2000, having worked in the county yards of Yucaipa, Fontana and Blue Jay.
He and Nelda retired to Lake Havasu City, September of 2000. Larry crafted fishing rods and enjoyed fishing at Site 6, which he considered his second career. He would fish the early morning hours when he could watch the sunrise and be inspired by God’s handiwork with the beauty of nature around him. His faith in God allowed him to embrace the joy of life; he was a devout member of Calvary Baptist Church and a life-long Christian. Spending time with family were the happiest memories.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nelda; three veteran sons, Michael, and wife, Karen, of Eagle River, Ark.; Phillip, and wife, Brandi, of Riverview, Fla., and Matthew, of San Diego, Calif.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. His parents and brother, Loren, preceded him in death.
A small Celebration of Life with family and close friends took place; there will be no formal services. In Larry’s memory, donations can be made to Hospice of Havasu, P.O. Box 597, Lake Havasu City AZ 86405.
