A Lake Havasu City man who was arrested on domestic violence charges last week said he did not hit his ex-girlfriend during their confrontation.

Steve Gilchrist, 33, was charged with assault and disorderly conduct after police said an argument over politics led to a physical altercation between him and his ex-girlfriend.

She told police he slapped her then charged her and wrestled her to the floor but Gilchrist claims she attacked him and he restrained her as a means to defend himself.

Gilchrist said the woman has not lived at his home for more than a month and felt he was trapped when she showed up and refused to leave. Police said they noted Gilchrist had abrasions on his knee that were consistent with wrestling and noted there was no bruising on the woman’s face. Gilchrist will return to court in September.
