An earthquake that shook southern Ecuador and northern Peru has killed at least 15 people and left others trapped under rubble. The U.S. Geological Survey reported an earthquake with a magnitude of about 6.8 on Saturday about 50 miles south of Guayaquil. That's Ecuador’s second-largest city. Ecuador’s emergency response agency reports two people died in the highlands state of Azuay and 12 others in the coastal state of El Oro. Peruvian authorities say a 4-year-old girl died from head trauma she suffered when her home collapsed. In Ecuador, authorities also reported cracks on buildings and homes and some collapsed walls.

The state of California and a generic drug manufacturer have entered a 10-year partnership to produce affordable, state-branded insulin that they hope will rival longtime producers and push down prices. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom says the intent is to disrupt the insulin marketplace, where prices have steadily climbed in recent decades. The product is not expected on store shelves until next year. It is difficult to predict what effect it would have on a market already shaken by change. Insulin makers have recently promised steep price cuts, as pressure builds on drugmakers and insurers to slash the cost of the drug used by millions of Americans.
Top Republicans, including some of Donald Trump’s potential rivals for the GOP's 2024 presidential nomination, are rushing to his defense after Trump said he's bracing for possible arrest. The reaction points to the political risks faced by would-be opponents who are eager to convince voters that it's time to move on from the former president but also fear alienating his loyal base. The comments came hours after Trump declared in a social media post that he expects to be arrested this coming week in a case that the Manhattan district attorney is investigating over hush money payments made to women who alleged Trump had sexual encounters with them. Trump has denied the allegations.
